What are the 5 steps of inhalation?

1. Inhaled air moves into the pharynx and then to the trachea, which carries air into the bronchial tubes.

2. The air continues through the bronchial tubes, which branch into smaller and smaller tubes in the lungs called bronchioles.

3. Finally, the air ends up in the alveoli, tiny air sacs that are surrounded by small blood vessels  called capillaries

4. At the same time, carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood and into the alveoli, then out of the lungs when we exhale.

100

What are alveoli?

Alveoli- At the end of the bronchi, millions can be found that allow air to contact the body’s capillaries.  The capillaries allow the body to have gas exchange

100

What is the larynx?

Larynx- Where sound is produced, also considered a part of the respiratory system

100

The lungs are closely linked with...

The lungs are the main organs of the human respiratory system, and they are closely linked with the circulatory system.

200

What happens during exhalation?

The lungs remove carbon dioxide from the blood and expel it from the body

200

What are bronchi?

Bronchi- Small, hollow branching structures that extend through the lungs

200

What is the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein?

Pulmonary Artery- Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs

Pulmonary Vein- Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart

200

When and where does gas exchange occur?

Gas exchange in the body occurs because gasses tend to move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.

Gas exchange during breathing takes place in the alveoli, where carbon dioxide from blood cells diffuses into the lungs to be exhaled.

300

What is the function of the respiratory system?

The respiratory system brings oxygen to the body. It also helps eliminate waste gasses. It works closely with the circulatory system

300

What are Cilla?

Cilia- The mucus and hairs in the nose that act like a filter for solid pollutants

300

What is diffusion?

Diffusion- The reason oxygen in the ling naturally enters our bloodstream is because of this process. Having lots of oxygen in your lungs and very little in your blood will cause oxygen to diffuse naturally through the Alveoli in order to become balanced

300

Why are the lungs important?

The lungs are important because they draw in the air that we breathe.  Air sacs fill with oxygen and then pass the oxygen into the blood. The lungs also help expel waste gasses

400

When does inhaling occur?

Inhaling occurs when the diaphragm contracts and moves downward. At the same time the rib muscles lift the ribs up and outward so that the lungs have more space.

400

What are bronchiole tubes?

Bronchial Tubes- Connects from the trachea.  Lead to branching passages throughout the lung called bronchioles

400

What is the trachea

Trachea- The tube which air flows in and out of the lung

400

How do the respiratory system and excretory system relate to each other?

The respiratory system contributes to other bodily functions like the excretory system. As carbon dioxide waste is generated by cells during cellular respiration, the waste needs to be eliminated from the body.  Carbon dioxide is eliminated either through the kidneys in the form of carbonic acid or through the lungs in the form of carbon dioxide gas.

500

When does exhaling occur?

exhaling occurs when the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, causing the lungs to contract. This forces air out of the lungs.

500

What is cell respiration?

Cell Respiration- The process by which the body’s cells use carbohydrates to release energy  stored in its chemical bonds

500

What is the diaphragm?

Diaphragm- This structure causes the lungs to expand and contract

500

What is respiration?

Respiration is the process by which oxygen and carbon dioxide is transported between the external environment and cells in the body. This is different from breathing, which is the process of taking air into the lungs and expelling air
