It is perfectly acceptable to recognize after reading a job description that you may no longer want to inquire about a position – this is exactly why these exist!

  • Boundaries can be set prior to employment- your interview is a great opportunity to discuss your boundaries to see if the job would be good fit!

What is the difference between formal and casual communication in the workplace? 

  • Formal communication means maintaining professional tone, staying within boundaries such office hours, and using professional names, usually through emails or schedule meetings (Mrs., Dr., etc)
  • Casual communications means, shorter quick messages, can be through email or phone calls- BUT it does not mean that you can violate workplace boundaries.

How should you respond to a friend request from a coworker? 

  • You don’t owe coworkers online access to you, in fact most companies have policies that discourage online relationships between employees.
  • This can verge on a duel relationship- one where you’re coworkers and friends- this can become slippery in a professional setting!
  • When you grant access to a coworker of your social media- you are also granting the company!
  • Even a trusted persons may not share your same social media presence or belief and that can become a red flag.
