  • This shows that the youth is capable of taking on the other person’s perspective and helps because the other person will not likely become as defensive.
  • This statement would also state the youth’s perspective and any requests.
  • Requests should be brief, positive, and specific.

  • This does not blame anyone but promotes a shared responsibility with creating and solving the problem.
  • Use “I statements.”
  • Example: I was upset from our argument and slammed my door too hard.

What is neglect?

  • Physical neglect
    A child's basic needs, such as food, clothing or shelter, are not met or they aren't properly supervised or kept safe.
  • Educational neglect
    A parent doesn't ensure their child is given an education.
  • Emotional neglect
    A child doesn't get the nurture and stimulation they need. This could be through ignoring, humiliating, intimidating or isolating them.
  • Medical neglect
    A child isn't given proper health care. This includes dental care and refusing or ignoring medical recommendations.

What are the two common pitfalls to communicating effectively?

  • Blaming: Not taking responsibility for your own actions and saying it is the other person’s fault that you feel or behaved that way.
  • Rehashing old problems: Bringing up a problem from the past after a solution had been reached.
