(So we don't have to make guesses about them- we know for sure)

Sarcasm!!!
(but remember- all sarcasm is verbal irony- but not all verbal irony will be sarcasm)
When Laurie calls his father an "old dust mop" this is considered foreshadowing because.....
Charles was rude to his teachers and peers... since Laurie is Charles, he is mirroring the same behavior at home.
Inference: Why does Laurie misbehave?
- He could be looking for attention from his peers/ teachers/ or parents
- He thinks it is funny to misbehave!
- His parents don't teach him that it is wrong
etc. All conclusions that we draw are correct- as long as we are referencing to what we know and our own logic!

To make the story more engaging and entertaining! Readers are able to make their own inferences about the text and the characters.
