In general, a growing number of studies indicate that wildlife, like humans, is stressed by a noisy environment. The endangered Sonoran pronghorn avoids noisy areas frequented by military jets; female frogs exposed to traffic noise have more difficulty locating the male’s signal; gleaning bats avoid hunting in areas with road noise. When these effects are combined with other stressors such as winter weather, disease, and food shortages, sound impacts can have important implications for the health and vitality of wildlife populations within a park.
Wildlife populations are significantly affected by noise.
The word is terracide. It is not committed with guns and knives, but with relentless bulldozers, roaring dump trucks, and giant shovels like mythological beasts. Dynamite cuts and rips apart mountains to reach the minerals inside, leaving nothing but empty, naked hills. Year after year, most literature classes cover the same authors and genres. It’s time that educators made a change. For teachers to keep current and engage students, we must allow students to read diverse texts from their own generation. As a first step, hip-hop should be included in the literature curriculum. This suggestion is not as odd as it may seem. After all, hip-hop is simply another form of poetry, as are all song lyrics. It contains a rhyme scheme, rhythm, and meter. In addition, hip-hop lyrics deal with the same timeless themes as other forms of poetry, including heartache and the challenges of growing up. In many ways, today’s hip-hop artists are contemporary versions of Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson, only with a modern, fresh perspective.

The author uses harsh word choices, comparisons, and pathos when describing strip mining.
How does the author’s word choice develop the tone?
Often you feel you’ve done nothing when you’ve actually done a lot. That’s because what you did do seemed beneath notice—it was so small that it didn’t “count.” But it did—just as each stitch counts toward a finished dress, each brick or nail toward a house you can live in, each mistake toward knowing how to do things right.
Encouraging, supportive, etc.
They use positive language and make positive comparisons.

How does this affect the text’s meaning?
Connection: Ulysses and the sirens. The sirens are not playful in the painting. The text helps us to see the allure of the sirens and to understand why Ulysses would put himself in this situation.
