What is a simile?

What is a noun?
A form of punctuation used to emphasize
What is a dash?
An exaggeration not meant to be taken literally
What is hyperbole?
Example:
I'm very hungry, but I can't find anything to eat.
What is compound sentences/conjuctions?
When an author presents ideas/events in time OR facts as causes and the resulting effects - or facts that happen as a result of an event.
What is cause and effect?
Modifies a noun or pronoun
What is an adjective?
Words that should always be capitalized, no matter where they are in a sentence
What are proper nouns?
Giving human qualities to something non-human
What is personification?
Example:
Before the bell rings, write down your homework.
What is prepositional phrases?
When an author presents information by detailing how two or more events, concepts, theories, or things are alike and/or different.
What is compare and contrast?
Connects different parts of a sentence (hint: FANBOYS)
What is a conjunction?
Point of view where the reader knows all the characters' thoughts and feelings
What is third person omniscient?
A statement that's meaning cannot be decided from the individual words (i.e. "it's raining cats and dogs")
What is an idiom?
Example:
The graceful, talented performer stole the show.
What is separate adjectives?
When an author lists items or events in numerical or chronological order - either explicit or implied
What is sequence or time order?
Used in isolation to express a feeling, give a command, or greet someone
What is an interjection?
A sentence with two independent clauses joined by a conjunction
What is a compound sentence?
A reference within a work to another literary work, an event in history, or a famous artwork
What is an allusion?
Example:
Stephen King, a famous author, writes suspenseful novels.
What is appositives?
When an author "shows" the order of where things are placed (i.e. directions)
What is spatial?
Tells where or when something is happening
What is a preposition?
A word or phrase that describes or explains another word or phrase in a sentence (hint: we correct a lot of misplaced...)
