Sometimes we use the acronym CMS to remember how to do a fair test. What does the C stand for, if M = "Measure something" and S = "keep everything else the Same"?

Change one thing.

Which of the following seems to move the fastest across the sky as the days go on?

A) The North Star

B) The Moon

C) Jupiter

The Moon.

For many thousands of years, people all around the world believed (for very good reasons - lots of evidence!) that all stars and planets revolved around __________.

The Earth (us!)

What is Mr. Gazer's first name?

Reuben

This image has which type(s) of symmetry?

Line AND Rotation Symmetry.

A variable that we change on purpose in an experiment is called the ____________ variable.

Manipulated.

The North Star is a star that doesn't appear to move in the sky throughout the year. What is the official name of the North Star? (Hint: What is this star "above"?)

Polaris (the pole star)

200

The type of "system" where everything in the universe revolves around the Earth is called a ____________ system.

Geocentric (geo means "Earth" like "geography", study of Earth's places, or "geology", study of Earth's rocks)

200

What are 2 of the 3 types of Bubbly Mr. Gazer has in his mini-fridge beside his desk?

Lime, strawberry and grapefruit!

300

This image has rotation symmetry.

What is the ORDER OF ROTATION?

2

When we "measure something", the variable that we are measuring is called the ______________ variable.

Response/responding variable.

Which planet is named after a ROMAN OCEAN GOD? (Hint: this ocean god's original name is POSEIDON in Greek).

Neptune

300

The motion of which object(s) in the sky directly contradicted Aristotle's idea that everything revolved around Earth on rotating spheres?

The planets (retrograde motion)

300

What is the surface area of a cube with a side-length of 3cm?

6 sides x Area of 1 side = 6 x (3x3) = 6 x 9

= 54 cm2

If you translate this  triangle 1 meter down, will the entire image (with both triangles) show symmetry, and if so, which type?

No line symmetry.

I am running an experiment to see which type of music will allow students to study the most effectively. In my experiment, I give groups of students different types of music to listen to all week while studying and then give them a quiz on Friday and compare their scores.

In my experiment, what is the response variable?

Their scores on the quiz.

400

Roughly how long does it take for the Moon to go around the Earth 1 full time?

Roughly 1 month (~28 days)

400

To account for retrograde motion of planets (the fact planets seem to "go backwards" sometimes), who proposed an alternative idea about how the universe works that partially explained the planet's weird motion?

Ptolemy ("epicycles")

How many provinces and territories are there in Canada (a single number)?

13 (10 provinces, 3 territories)

For the following image

a) Does it have line symmetry? [YES/NO]

b) Does it have rotation symmetry? [YES/NO]

c) If yes to c), what is the order of rotation?

a) NO line symmetry.

b) YES rotation symmetry.

c) Order of rotation = 3

I am running an experiment to see which type of music will allow students to study the most effectively. In my experiment, I give groups of students different types of music to listen to all week while studying and then give them a quiz on Friday and compare their scores. Some students use the MathLinks textbook for studying, while some use a different textbook called MathFocus - both are good books! I make sure that they all write the same test, have the same time to write the test, and all have the same amount of time to study.

Is this a fair test? Why or why not?

Nope - using different textbooks! Even if they're both "good books", one book might help students achieve higher grades on the quiz than the other. Keep everything else the same (except the music choice!)

Mr. Gazer described a way of finding the North Star in the night - first, you find ___________ constellation, and then you look ______________. Fill in the blanks.

You find The Big Dipper constellation and then you look upwards along the right side of the "spoon".

500

Though he wasn't technically the first (and wasn't completely correct either), who famously proposed the heliocentric model of the universe where the planets and stars revolve around The Sun?

Nicolas Copernicus
