Parallel structure (also called parallelism) is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence. By making each compared item or idea in your sentence follow the same grammatical pattern, you create a parallel construction.

Subject- Verb Agreement: High levels of pollution CAUSE damage to the respiratory tract.
The subject is the plural levels, NOT the mass noun pollution. A good trick to identify the subject and check for subject-verb agreement is to cross out prepositional phrases, cross out word groups within commas, and cross out word groups beginning with either, neither, or nor.
