You are going hiking and check the weather, pack enough food and water, and research the track before leaving. Which Leave No Trace principle are you following?

Plan Ahead and Prepare

100

Define Climate Change

A long-term shift in global or regional climate patterns, temperature and weather averages over decades or longer.

100

What are the four main cardinal directions on a compass?

North, South, East, West

100

What do contour lines show on a map?

They show changes in elevation (height) of the land.

100

What does it mean to have a balanced diet?Eating a variety of foods that provide the nutrients our body needs.

Eating a variety of foods that provide the nutrients our body needs.

200

You find an unusual rock and a beautiful native flower while hiking. Your friend wants to take both home as souvenirs. What principle is this, and list 2 reasons why they shouldn't.

Leave What You Find. Natural objects and plants should remain where they are so others can experience them and ecosystems aren't disturbed.

200
What is food insecurity?

The limited or uncertain availability of safe, nutritious food, or the inability to acquire acceptable food in socially acceptable ways.

200

What is a bearing?

A bearing is used to represent the direction of one point relative to another point. It is measured in degrees

200

What does it mean when contour lines are very close together and what is it mean when they are spread far apart?

The land is steep, the land has a gentle slope or is flat.

200

Give 2 reasons why is it important to drink water during a hike?

To replace fluids lost through sweating and prevent dehydration or maintain energy and performance.

300

Someone in your group wants to leave an apple core in the bush because “it’s natural.” What principle is this? Give 3 examples of why this is incorrect practice.

Dispose of Waste Properly. Food scraps are not a natural food source for wildlife, make the environment look messy, attract pests, and it takes a long time to break down.

300

A drought destroys a large percentage of a wheat crop. What is likely to happen to the price of wheat, and why?

The price is likely to increase because there is less wheat available to meet demand.

300

Why is it important to know how to navigate using a map and compass rather than relying only on technology such as a GPS or phone?

Technology can lose battery, signal or become damaged. Knowing how to use a map and compass provides a reliable backup and helps you navigate safely in remote areas.

300

Why are contour lines useful when planning a hiking route?

They allow you to understand the shape and steepness of the terrain before you travel, helping you choose a safer and more manageable route.

300

What are the three main macronutrients that provide energy and support body function? Give an example for each.

Carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

Rice, chicken, avocado etc

400

A student finds a campfire ring at an unofficial campsite and says, “Someone has already had a fire here, so we might as well use it.” List 4 factors you should consider before deciding whether to have a fire.

Minimise Campfire Impacts. Consider whether fires are permitted, fire danger, local regulations, availability of firewood and the potential impact on the environment.

400

Farmers depend on reliable rainfall, suitable temperatures and healthy soil. Explain 4 ways climate change can affect food production.

Increased drought, heat stress, floods, changing rainfall patterns, pests/disease, or reduced crop yields.

400

A map has a scale of 1:25,000. What does this mean?

1 cm on the map represents 25,000 cm (250 m) on the ground.

400

If the contour interval is 20 metres and one contour line is 100 m, what height is the next contour line?

20 m or 80 m, depending on whether you are moving uphill or downhill.

400

After a difficult hike, give a detailed example of how each macronutrient benefits the body and supports recovery.

Carbohydrates: Replenish the body's glycogen stores, providing energy for recovery and future physical activity.

Protein: Helps repair and rebuild muscles that have been stressed during the hike.

Fats: provide a lot of energy, protect organs, keep the body warm, and help absorb vitamins.

500

Your group has been asked to design a Leave No Trace plan for a 3-day camp. Identify five Leave No Trace principles and give one specific action your group would take for each principle to reduce environmental impact.

Answers will vary: Students must correctly apply five principles to a realistic camping situation.

500

Name 5 extreme weather events and list a preventative strategy for each

Bushfires, floods, droughts, cyclones and coral bleaching.

Planned burns, build drainage systems and flood walls, conserve water, shelter, and reduce chemical pollution.

500

Explain the steps you would take to use a compass and a map to get a bearing.

Find where you are on the map.
Find where you want to go.
Place the edge of the compass between your current location and destination.
Make sure the direction-of-travel arrow points towards your destination.
Rotate the compass housing until the north lines inside the compass match the north-south grid lines on the map.
Look at the number where the direction of travel arrow meets the compass housing.
Hold the compass flat.
Rotate your body until the red magnetic needle lines up with north.
Walk in the direction of the travel arrow.

500

How can you identify a hill, a saddle, a spur line, a ridge line and a gully from conour lines?

The contour lines form a small closed circle in the middle of other contour lines, two small circles are next to each other, the contour lines form a U or V shape that generally points downhill, away from higher ground further apart, mutiple small circles in a row and the contour lines form V-shapes that generally point uphill/upstream generally with a blue line.

500

List 5 things you should take into consideration when meal prepping for a multi day hike and why these are important.

weight, waste, size, is it going to go off, nutrion/benefits, will it get squiished
