What is computer hardware?

Physical parts of the computer you can touch.

100

Name the three (3) types of computer memory.

Magnetic Memory

Optical Memory

Transistor Memory

100

Define file management?

File management is organising your files in an orderly manner so they are easy to find and use again.

100

What is a Font? Name one example.

A font is the shape and design of a set of characters. Fonts are letters that all look the same.

Eg: Arial, Times New Roman

100

Define Spreadsheet.

A spreadsheet is used to manage numeric data.  A spreadsheet is a grid of columns and rows.

200

Identify any three (3) components that are inside the system unit.

Motherboard, RAM, CPU, ROM

200

Identify the method used by optical memories to read and write data.

Optical memory: Uses a laser “eye” to read and write data. A laser is a very strong beam of light used for recording and playing CD & DVD

200

Differentiate between file and folder.

A file is created from different software applications.  It is a collection of information that has a filename.

A folder is used to organise and store files and other folders (sub-folders).

200
List three examples of word processing programs.

MS Word

Word Perfect

Open Office Writer

Mac Pages

Google Docs

200

List two advantages of using a spreadsheet.

  • makes numeric calculation fast and accurate
  • create charts or graphs
  • formulas can be updated and recalculated quickly
  • data is easily retrieved, edited, printed and stored.

Name one example of a peripheral device then explain its role in the computer system.

Scanner - Scans documents and pictures in to a digital copy so they can be changed and edited from the computer. (similar to a photo copy machine)

Speakers - An outputs device that allows the electronic sound signal to exit the computer.

Projector - A device that uses rays of light to projects slides or film through a glass lens.

300

Differentiate between primary and secondary memory.

Primary memory can directly accessed by the CPU while Secondary memory cannot be accessed directly by the CPU. Data in secondary memory must be transferred to the main memory to read by CPU.

Primary memory holds small amount of data while Secondary memory stores large amount of data.

Primary memory is involved in the processing of data when the computer in being used. Secondary memory only store data when needed.

300

Describe the importance of using filepaths/pathways.

A path is a way of describing the location of the file in the hierarchy. It leads from the drive (also known as the root directory) to the folder or file.

300

Differentiate between "Serif" and "Sans-serif" type of font. Give one example for each.

Serif font: have small lines at the end of characters.  Eg. Times New Roman

San Serif font:  do not have small lines at the end of characters.  Eg. Arial (Sans mean without)

300

Differentiate between "formula" and "function". Give example.

Formula uses operator symbols. Eg: -, +, *, /

Function uses names of operations. Eg: Sum, Max, Min, Average

400

Discuss the main role of a Power Supply in the computer system. What happens if it fail to function?

The computer needs the Power supply in order for it to function. The main role of a power supply is supplying the computer with the electricity it needs by converting Alternate Current to Direct Current.

400

Briefly describe volatile and non-volatile memories. Give one example for each.

Volatile memory - loses its content when the power is off. Eg: Ram

Non volatile memory - does not loose content when the power is off.  Eg: ROM, HDD, FDD,

A hierarchy is a diagram that shows where files and folders are stored in the computer. Name and define any three (3) parts of a hierarchy.

Root: The drive or the storage device.

Folder: Where files and folders are stored.

Subfolder: Folders stored in another folder.

400

Name and explain any two (2) features of MS Word program.

Spelling and grammar check: Check splelling and grammar errors.

Thesaurus: Find synonyms and antonyms of words

Font Size: Change the size of text.

Font Color: Change the color of text.

400

Discuss the use of autofill handle.

Auto fill handle is used to copy formula or content of one cell into other adjacent (next) cells. The fill handle on the lower-right corner of a selected cell is dragged to the adjacent cells.

500
The CPU has two main components. Identify and describe these two components.

Arithmetic logic unit (ALU) - which is responsible for calculations on data, such as addition, multiplication, etc.

Control Unit - controls the speed of the computer operations.

500

Discuss the flow of data through computer memories.

•When you open a program or a file, it is loaded from the storage to the main memory.

•When you save the file or close the program, it’s stored back in the secondary memory.

500
Write file extensions of the programs listed below.

- Word 2010

- Excel 2007

- Access 2010

- PowerPoint 2003

- Word 2010 = .docx

- Excel 2007 = .xlsx

- Access 2010 = .accdb

- PowerPoint 2003 = .ppt

500

Discuss the effects of "First Line" and "Hanging" indents when formatting paragraph.

The first line indent marker sets the left margin for the first line of a paragraph. (Only the first line moves in from the left margin.)

The hanging indent leaves the first line at its position and sets the rest of the paragraph lines at an indent (handing off the first line).

Convert this formula to its function form.

=(A1+A2+A3)/3

=AVERAGE (A1:A3)
