General Johnny Burgoyne, a British general close to General Howe, set out to isolate New England from the rest of the colonies by leading an army down a route of lakes where he would meet up with Howe’s troops. Howe had to lug a profusion of things while taking 3,000 mercenaries, 4,000 redcoats, and 1,000 Mohawk to the meeting place. There, Burgoyne found out that Howe would never come and was surrendered by Horatio Gates’ (a popular general appointed by the Continental Congress to command the Northern Department of the Continental Army) army. Then, Burgoyne had to surrender his battered army to Gates.
