What is comparing and contrasting?
Also known as sentence structure or word order
What is syntax?
Tells a story, usually in chronological order.
What is narrative writing?
Encompasses the motivations behind a writer’s diction, style, and structure
What is author's purpose?
An article about the benefit of social networking including quotes from Mark Zuckerberg, for example.
What is ethos?
The mood or attitude that a writer or speaker conveys through their word choice
What is tone?
Makes reference to a famous story or historical event to give an audience a point of comparison
What is allusion?
Utilizes the five senses to immerse the reader
What is descriptive writing?
The "A" of "SOAPSTone"
What is audience?
An ad for an electric vehicle with the tagline: "Gas is expensive," for example.
Used to emphasize essential points through the recurring use of a specific sound, word, or phrase.
What is repetition?
The creation of statements that explain their purpose and leave the reader with a clear and concise understanding of the context of a statement
What is explicit writing?
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, for example.
What is informative/expository?
Supposedly Aristotle's preferred rhetorical appeal
What is logos?
This Greek philosopher is credited with being the "father of rhetoric"
Who is Aristotle?
Used to increase audience attention through the incorporation of relatable subject matter. Usually a reference to an older literary work.
What is allusion?
Comparing two like subjects through the use of well-known or familiar examples
What is simile?
The Declaration of Independence, for example.
What is persuasive?
Someone who is always able to see what is persuasive, and to see the possibility of persuasion in every situation
