Light one rope at both ends and the other at one end. When the first rope burns out (30 minutes), light the other end of the second rope. It will burn out in 15 minutes, giving you a total of 45 minutes.

  1. Turn on the first switch and leave it on for a few minutes.

  2. Turn off the first switch, and immediately turn on the second switch.

  3. Enter the second room.

  • The light bulb that is on is controlled by the second switch.

  • The light bulb that is off but warm is controlled by the first switch.

  • The light bulb that is off and cold is controlled by the third switch.

A man goes into a store and buys a $1 item. He pays with a $5 bill. The cashier gives him $3 in change, but the man leaves and later returns the $3. The store owner is confused but accepts the $3. Why did the man do this?

The man wanted to confuse the cashier into giving him the item for free. The original purchase was valid, but when he returned the $3, the cashier thought it was part of a refund, which made the item essentially free.
