What are the 3 types of rigid transformations?

translations

rotations

reflections

100

What is a translation in math?

Moving from one position to another, but not spinning or flipping.

100

What is a rotation in math?

Spinning or turning a shape around a vertex or point of rotation

100

What is a reflection in math?

When a shape is flipped across a line of reflection

100

5 x (6 + 11)

85

True or False:

When a shape is rotated, reflected, or translated, the new (image) is a different size and shape than the original (pre-image)

False.

When a shape is rotated, reflected, or translated, the image is the same size and shape as the pre-image.

200

Describe this translation using normal words:l words

Triangle ABC moves to the right 7 spaces.

200

Describe this rotation:

Triangle ABC is rotating 90 degrees counterclockwise

200

Describe this reflection (how or where is it reflecting?)

Triangle ABC is reflecting over the y-axis.

200

What percent of your grade are quizzes?

30%

300

What are the 2 pieces of information we need to include when describing a rotation

1. How many degrees in the rotation

2. Which direction (clockwise or counterclockwise)

300

Describe this translation using (x, y) notation:

(x, y) --> (x + 6, y - 4)

300

Describe the difference between a 90 degree rotation and a 180 degree rotation. If you can't use words, draw an example.

A 90 degree rotation turns the shape sideways or "1 turn"

A 180 degree rotation turns the shape backwards or "2 turns"

300

Describe this reflection:

Point A is reflecting over the x-axis

300

62 - (10 * 4 - 4)

0

400

Where is this translation telling us to go?

(x, y) --> (x + 2, y - 1)

Move to the right 2 spaces and down 1 space

400

What is this translation telling you to do:

(x, y) --> (x - 6, y)

Move 6 units to the left and do not move up or down.

400

What do the words clockwise and counterclockwise mean? Why do we use those words instead of just left or right?

Clockwise means to rotate in the direction a clock moves. Counterclockwise means to rotate in the opposite direction. We use these words instead of left and right because left or right might change depending on what part of the shape you're looking at.

400

Describe in words how to exactly reflect a shape across a line of reflection

Count the number of squares between a point on the shape and the line of reflection, then place the new point exactly that many squares across. Do this for all the points on the shape.

400

A shape is reflected over the x-axis, then the y-axis. What other transformation would result in a similar result?

180 degree rotation.

OR

depending on the shape, it could be a translation

500

What is the only type of transformation that describes a change in size? (HINT: We have not really practiced with this one)

Dilation

500

On your whiteboard, draw the following:

1. Draw a small triangle in Quadrant II (the upper left quadrant). Label the triangle T.

2. Translate the triangle by (x, y) --> (x + 3, y - 5). Label the new triangle T prime.

Answers may vary.

500

Rotate this shape 90 degrees clockwise around the origin:

Answers will vary, but the triangle will be "pointing" downward and in the bottom right quadrant.

500

Reflect this shape over the y-axis:

The "fish" will be moved to the right and flipped around. It will face to the left.

500

A line is 14 meters long. It is dilated by a factor of 20 times. How long do you think the new line is

280 meters
