When the Germans reached Moscow, Soviet general, Georgi Zhukov, counterattacked. As temperatures fell, the Germans, wearing summer uniforms, retreated. Ignoring Napoleon's defeat over 130 years before, Hitler told his soldiers "No Retreat!" German troops dug in about 125 miles west of Moscow. They held the line against the Soviets until March 1943. During this the Soviet Union gained nothing but the Germans lost about 500,000 lives.
