Some schools are adopting year-round schedules, but I believe that long summer vacations are beneficial and necessary. First of all, many students need to work during the summer. Without several months to devote to full-time work, teens will be cheated of income and work experience. Additionally, some students need to re-take courses in summer school. If there is no time to catch up, those students will fall further behind. Finally, teachers deserve an extended break from school. They might need to take classes themselves, to stay up to date in their subject matter. Without a summer break, teachers don’t have a chance to do this. In conclusion, there are important reasons to keep long summer vacations.

What are the three reasons that this author uses to argue that school should continue to have long summer breaks?

Students want to work in the summer, People need to retake classes, and teachers need a break.

Dolphins are regarded as the friendliest creatures in the sea and stories of them helping drowning sailors have been common since Roman times. The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize that their society is more complex than people previously imagined. They look after other dolphins when they are ill, care for pregnant mothers and protect the weakest in the community, as we do.  Could any of these mammals be more intelligent than man? Certainly the most common argument in favor of man's superiority over them that we can kill them more easily than they can kill us is the least satisfactory. On the contrary, the more we discover about these remarkable creatures, the less we appear superior when we destroy them.

The writer of the passage thinks that we can kill dolphins more easily than they can kill us. What do they say about this?

A) That they are better adapted to their environment than we are

B) That dolphins have a very sophisticated form of communication

C) That it does not mean that we are superior to them

D) It proves that dolphins have linguistic skills far beyond what we previously thought

What’s the theme of this passage?

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. "Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?" "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same." "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; “we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew.

What’s the main idea of this passage?

A penny for your thoughts? If it’s a 1943 copper penny, it could be worth as much as fifty thousand dollars. In 1943 most pennies were made out of steel since copper was needed for World War II, so the 1943 copper penny is ultra-rare. Another rarity is the 1955 double-die penny. These pennies were mistakenly double-stamped, so they have overlapping dates and letters. If it’s uncirculated, it’d easily fetch $25,000 at an auction. Now that’s a pretty penny.
