Describe the 'flip your lid' hand model of the brain.
Your thumb represents the amygdala and your four other fingers represent the cortex. The 'lid' can be closed (the four fingers cover the amygdala) or open (the four fingers do not cover your thumb, meaning the amygdala is in control).

We want the 'thinking' part of our brain, the cortex, to be in control. This allows us to think about our actions, our thoughts, and their consequences, instead of just acting on our emotions.
