Volume
100
Name the three types of rocks.
Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary
100
What is the rock cycle?
The pattern of slow changes in rocks from one kind to another.
100
On Mohs' Hardness Scale from 1-10, 1 represents the softest or hardest mineral?
Softest
100
What is Ms. Lindh's favorite color?
Green
200
What is a mineral's luster?
Luster describes how a mineral's surface looks when light reflects from it.
200
This type of rock is formed when layers of sediment are squeezed and stuck together.
Sedimentary Rock
200
Rocks are made from what?
Minerals
200
What is the softest mineral?
Talc
200
What is the mascot of Sunset Hills?
A Seagull
300
How do you measure a mineral's hardness?
A mineral's hardness is its ability to resist being scratched. You can use a harder mineral to scratch a softer mineral.
300
Which rock is formed when magma cools?
Igneous rock
300
How does weathering affect rocks?
The rocks are slowly broken into pieces.
300
What is the hardest mineral?
Diamond
300
Why is pumice lighter than other minerals the same size?
Pumice has tiny holes in it caused by gases being released when lava cools down. The holes make it lighter.
400
What is the powder that is left behind when you rub a mineral against a white tile?
The mineral's "streak"
400
This type of rock had been changed by high heat and great amounts of pressure.
Metamorphic Rock
400
You find a rock with pieces of seashells in it. Which kind of rock is it?
A sedimentary rock
400
Calcite has a hardness of 3. Quartz has a hardness of 6. Which will scratch the other?
Quartz will scratch Calcite.
400
Why aren't you likely to find a fossil in a metamorphic or igneous rock?
Pressure and heat that form metamorphic and igneous rocks would destroy any fossils.
500
How is a mineral different from a rock?
A mineral is made of particles arranged in a crystal pattern. Rocks are made up of minerals.
500
The Grand Canyon is made up of what kinds of rocks?
Sedimentary Rocks
500
How are igneous rocks different from metamorphic rocks?
Both rocks are formed when sediment melts then cools. In metamorphic rocks, the sediments are not mixed together and can still be seen separated in the new rock. In igneous rocks, the sediments are mixed together in the mantle making the igneous rock look the same throughout.
