What is a Rock?
An earth material made up of a mixture of one or more minerals, glass, mineraloids, or other organic materials.
100
When magma cools slowly, this creates which type of igneous rock?
Intrusive
100
What is the process of breaking down rocks into sediments?
Weathering and Erosion
100
This type of rocks include silicate based rocks, providing them with a lighter color and less dense composition than its igneous siblings.
Andesitic Igneous Rocks. (i.e. Pumice, Andesite, etc.)
100
Basaltic, Granitic, and Andesitic are all examples of this type of rock.
Igneous Rocks
200
What is the difference between Magma and Lava?
Magma is liquid rock found within the earth, lava is what magma is called after it has exited the earth's crust.
200
Which type of rock can be categorized based on its texture?
Metamorphic Rocks
200
What are the two characteristics of a rock's environment that will affect whether it becomes a metamorphic rock or not?
Heat & Pressure
200
True or False: Minerals and Rocks are the same things and therefore, are formed from the same processes.
False, Rocks are made of minerals
200
Where are the oldest layers of rock in the earth?
At the bottom.
300
What is the process in which layers of soil are continually laid over and compressed into each other to form sedimentary rocks?
Compaction
300
What results in igneous rock when the rock cools quickly, capturing tiny air bubbles in the rock?
The rock will be porous.
300
What two processes are involved in the creation of Sedimentary Rock?
Compaction and Cementation
300
Which type of rock is a bi-product or older rocks, sand, and dead plant and animal materials?
Sedimentary Rocks.
300
What 2 things can result from Igneous rocks in the rock cycle?
Sediment or Metamorphic Rocks.
400
What are the 2 types of igneous rock and how do they differ?
Intrusive igneous rock is formed within the earth and extrusive igneous rock is formed on the earth's surface after magma has exited the crust.
400
Which type of rocks result from magma cooling quick on the earth's surface?
Extrusive Igneous Rocks
400
True or False: Rocks can only change once before the rock cycle is over.
False, Rocks are always changing between types.
400
What must happen to magma in order for it to become and igneous rock?
Cooling of the magma into solid rock.
400
What are 3 characteristics used to classify rocks?
Texture, Where they come from, Appearance
500
What are the two types of textures a metamorphic rock can have and how are they different?
Foliated rock has mineral grains lined up throughout the rock whereas, non-foliated rock has no mineral grains and maintains the same texture throughout the entire rock.
500
Explain the Rock Cycle in your own words.
Rocks are weathered down into sediments, sediments are layered onto each other and compressed and cemented into sedimentary rocks. As the layers of sedimentary rocks get forced deeper into the earth's crust, heat and pressure transform sedimentary rocks into metamorphic rocks. Metamorphic rocks eventually make their way into the earth's magma and melts within the earth. Eventually these rocks will re-emerge from the earth's crust and cool as igneous rock before starting the cycle over again as the igneous rocks are eroded and weathered again.
500
What is an example of each type of rock
Answers will vary (Examples below) Igneous- Basalt, Obsidian, Pumice Metamorphic- Quartzite, Gneiss Sedimentary- Conglomerate, Limestone, siltstone
