What is a rock?
A mixture of minerals, rock fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials.
100
Do all extrusive igneous rocks contain crystals? Explain.
No some lava cools so fast that no crystals form.
100
Can a rock change into more then one type of metamorphic rocks.
Yes they can change into several different.
100
What is the difference between breccia and conglomerate?
Breccia has sharp sediments and conglomerate has rounded sediments.
100
Scoria
What is Igneous
200
What is the principle of conservation of matter?
Matter is neither created nor destroyed.
200
Why do some igneous rocks have bubbles?
Gas get trapped in the lava as it is cooling and then eventually the gas escapes leaving behind holes.
200
During metamorphism of granite into gneiss, what happens to the minerals?
They align into layers.
200
How are sedimentary rocks classified?
Where they were made and how they were formed.
200
Breccia
What is Sedimentary
300
Where does the rock cycle begin?
It is a cycle there is no beginning or end.
300
Name the three types of magma and describe each one.
Basaltic-dense, dark-colored rocks rich in iron and magnesium. Granitic-light-colored and low density rich in silica. Andesitic-Is in between Basaltic and Granitic.
300
What is the difference between foliated and nonfoliated rocks?
Foliated has layers and nonfoliated does not have layers.
300
How do organic sedimentary rocks form?
Made from the remains of once-living plants or animals. Shells accumulate on the ocean floor. The shells are cemented together over time.
300
Rhyolite
What is Igneous
400
How do you get from metamorphic rocks to sedimentary rocks? Be specific
Metamorphic rock goes through weather and erosion and turns into sediments. The sediments are then compacted and cemented to form sedimentary rocks.
400
How are igneous rocks classified?
By where they were formed and what they are made of
400
How are metamorphic rocks classified?
Texture and mineral composition.
400
How do chemical sedimentary rocks form?
Dissolved minerals come out of solution. Limestone forms calcite and rock salt forms halite.

What is Sedimentary
500
Name the five major processes of the rock cycle.
What is Melting, cooling, weathering and erosion, compaction and cementation, and heat and pressure.
500
How are igneous rocks formed be specific.
Magma under the earth's surface cools slowly then hardens forming a large crystal intrusive igneous rocks. Lava on earth's surface cools quickly then hardens forming small or no crystal extrusive igneous rocks.
500
How do metamorphic rocks form? Be specific.
Metamorphic rocks form from any type of rock deep within the Earth. They form deep within the Earth because that is were there is a lot of heat and pressure. Hot fluids within the crust of the Earth change the mineral composition in solid rocks without melting the rock.
500
How are detrital sedimentary rocks formed?
Made from broken fragments of other rocks. Weathering and then erosion break rocks up into sediments which are then deposited down river. Layer upon layer of sediments build up and compact. The minerals in water move through open spaces between larger sediments and cementation occurs gluing all the sediments together.
