On Christmas Day 1831, thousands of slaves went on strike, demanding freedom and wages. A Baptist preacher and slave named Samuel Sharpe led the strike. When authorities refused to give in to the demands of the slaves, the slaves revolted. They burned plantations and destroyed property. The rebellion went on for seven days before the British army put an end to it. Sharpe was hanged for his involvement. While the rebellion wasn't successful, it did help to change many people's opinion of slavery. Just one year later, slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire.
