On Christmas Day 1831, thousands of slaves went on strike, demanding freedom and wages. A Baptist preacher and slave named Samuel Sharpe led the strike. When authorities refused to give in to the demands of the slaves, the slaves revolted. They burned plantations and destroyed property. The rebellion went on for seven days before the British army put an end to it. Sharpe was hanged for his involvement. While the rebellion wasn't successful, it did help to change many people's opinion of slavery. Just one year later, slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire.

The history of drama can be traced back to the ancient Greeks of Athens. Early drama found its roots in religious ceremonies, specifically festivals held in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility. At the center of these festivals was a chorus of singers who performed a type of poetic song called a dithyramb. Over time, as dithyramb poems began to evolve into plays, these religious festivals became the venue for dramatic competitions between playwrights.
