This is a major difference in how the Christian churches function in the US government in comparison to how it functioned in Rome's government.
The US has a separation of church and state. The church doesn't have political power in the USA. In Rome, however, the pope claimed both spiritual and political power. He often involved himself in political decisions and argued with kings. Political leaders often couldn't get the support of the people without the support of the pope.

This caused the two main Christian churches (Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church) to split.
The pope in Rome claimed that he was the head of all churches. Leaders in the Eastern Orthodox Church believed that all patriarchs were equal and the pope was no higher than their patriarch in Constantinople. This disagreement led to the patriarchs excommunicating each other. (Kicking each other out of "the Church")
