Romeo and Juliet are enemies due to a family feud. What does Juliet recommend that Romeo do so that they can be together? If he does not do this, what does she say she will do?
Juliet says that Romeo should "deny thy father and refuse thy name" and if he does not, she will do it and no longer be a Capulet.
Who is Rosaline? Why is she important initially as we begin to understand more about Romeo?
Rosaline is Juliet's cousin and Romeo's first love (by beauty)
Characterize Romeo—how is he described initially? What do his actions tell you about him? Has he changed over the course of Acts I and II?
Benvolio
Towards him I made, but he was ware of me
And stole into the covert of the wood.
I, measuring his affections by my own —
Which then most sought where most might not be found,
Being one too many by my weary self —
Pursued my humor, not pursuing his,
And gladly shunned who gladly fled from me.
How does Lord Capulet’s relationship with Juliet defy traditional patriarchal terms?
- He cares about what she wants for her future
- He wants her consent in marriage before he gives his.
Lord Capulet's relationship with Juliet defies traditional patriarchal terms in the way that we are able to see him showing power over Juliet's decisions. Back then, the father or male of the household had what seemed to be total control over the women and children's decisions. Although Juliet is still a child and it is normal even now for parents to have control over their children's decisions, Lord Capulet is someone who is shown as a larger stronger force, deciding the fate of Juliet. This is both negative and positive // the safety of Juliet being a positive, and the lack of freedom being the negative
Name the speaker: Younger than you, here in Verona, ladies of esteem, are already made mothers.
Lady Capulet
What are the arrangements made between Romeo & Juliet? Who is part of the arrangement? What are the consequences of this arrangement if not everyone understands it?
The Nurse calls for Juliet, and Juliet goes inside for a moment. When she reappears, she tells Romeo that she will send someone to him the next day to see if his love is honorable and if he intends to wed her. The Nurse calls again, and again Juliet withdraws. She appears at the window once more to set a time when the Nurse should call on him. They settle on nine in the morning. They exult in their love for another moment before saying good night. They both intend to see Friar Lawrence.
What phrase directly correlates to the beginning actions of defiance and disrespect?
Hint: Sampson (Capulet Servant) does it to Abram (Montague Servant)
DO YOU BITE YOUR THUMB AT ME, SIR???
or
Biting the thumb is a sign of disrespect and defiance. It is definitely grounds for starting a fight.
Detail the language Romeo uses to describe Juliet—what does he compare her to?
Romeo
O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night As a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear — Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear. So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows. The measure done, I'll watch her place of standAnd, touching hers, make blessèd my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.
Describe the relationship between Juliet and her Nurse compared to Juliet and her mother.
Juliet and the Nurse have a stronger mother/daughter relationship than Juliet and Lady Capulet.
The nurse NURSED Juliet.
The relationship between Juliet and her Nurse compared to Juliet and her mother is very similar but she seems to be closer with the Nurse than with her own mother. This is shown when the nurse is talking about how much she loves Juliet and wants the best for her. Lady Capulet is someone who spends more time with other people than with her daughter and has the nurse to spend time with Juliet. This has caused Juliet and the nurse to form a very strong relationship with each other, with the nurse loving Juliet almost like a mother. This relationship is shown when it is clear that Juliet seems to feel more comfortable talking about relationships, or personal topics with the nurse, rather than her mother.
What does the Prologue do?
The function of the prologue is to:
Explain to the audience what will happen in the play
Explain to the audience who is involved in the play
Will possibly alert the audience to how long the action will take
Will possibly alert the audience to how the play ends
Describe Friar Lawrence's position on the marriage.
Friar Lawrence's position on the possible nuptials between Romeo & Juliet is to marry them and to try to end the feud between the two families. I do understand his position and I think it makes sense to want to end the fight between the Montagues and Capulets. This is because it has been going on for so long and has been something that has kept the two families and their descendants separated for many generations. If Romeo and Juliet are able to get married and their love is able to be, it could either help or hurt the families.
What is the reason Paris disagrees with Lord Capulet’s assessment of his potential marriage with Juliet? How does he come across to you as a reader?
Younger than she are happy mothers made.
How does the theme fate apply to the love between Romeo & Juliet. Make an arguments that the love between Romeo & Juliet is truly fate.
The theme of fate applies to the love between Romeo and Juliet because throughout Acts one and two, it seems as though the two character's lives have already been chosen or decided.
The first example of this is when the two meet, they seem to already be in love. This is shown as love at first sight.
Secondly, they are willing to do anything for each other. An example of when we see this is when Romeo goes to meet Juliet and he climbs the gardens to get to her even though he is aware that he could be killed if he was caught.
A third example of how fate is applied to the love between Romeo and Juliet is that because Romeo loves Juliet so much but is not allowed to because he is a Montague, he tells her that he is willing to change his name because he knows that they are meant to be.
