Mara means bitter. She asked to be called Mara because she is bitter at the Lord for the bitter providence that He has brought into her life.

What does this mean for Ruth? 

Closet relative is the term for the "redeemer" who would be able to taken ownership of Elimelech's land and care for Elimelech's family, which would include marrying Ruth.
