6 Kingdoms of Life
Names and Keys
100

An organism is said to have this if it can survive in its environment long enough to reproduce.

What is fitness?

100

This term describes a characteristic or behavior that helps an organism to survive in its environment.

What is an adaptation?

100

Fossils that are the most recent would be found here in the fossil record.

Where is at the top?

100

This is what King Phillip did.

What is came over for good spaghetti?

(kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species)

100

Linnaeus put together these 2 things to create an organism's scientific name.

What are genus and species?

200

These are random, happen from birth, and can be either positive or negative.

What are mutations

200

This is what caused white peppered moths to die off and black peppered moths to increase during the 1800's in England.

What is factory pollution?

200

This term, a synonym of selective breeding, is used when humans cause changes in an organism that benefit humans.

What is artificial selection?

200

This 3 kingdoms are always unicellular.

What are bacteria, archaea, and protista?

200

These 2 organisms are most closely related:

Dog = Canis Familiaris

Hyena = Hyaena brunnea

Coyote = Canis Latrans

What are the dog and the coyote?

They both belong to the same genus (Canis).

300

Keywords for this term include adapt, survive, reproduce, and die off.

What is natural selection?

300

In the Galapagos islands, some finches have small beaks, while others have large beaks. What will happen to the small-beaked finches if most of the small seeds on the island are killed by drought?

The small-beaked finches will be unable to get food, so they will die off. Their population will decrease.

300

According to the fossil record, how has the horse's foot evolved over time?

It went from having individual toes to having 1 hoof.

300

These kingdoms are always eukaryotic.

What are protista, fungi, plant, and animal?

300

This is Macrotus californicus. The bat has long ears and a triangular nose.

400

These 2 words could be used to describe Kingdom Protista because it is made of only one cell with a nucleus.

What are unicellular and eukaryotic?

400

Moles are mammals that dig tunnels. They eat worms that live deep underground, which they find using their sense of smell. A random mutation causes some moles to be born with a much stronger sense of smell. Over a 3-year period, scientists notice that normal moles are decreasing and mutated moles are increasing. What could cause this change?

A.) Less rainfall makes the worms burrow deeper underground.

B.) More rainfall makes the worms come closer to the surface.

A is correct! If the worms are further underground, the moles will need a stronger sense of smell to find them!

400

How has this environment changed over the fossil record?

It went from a forest environment to an ocean environment.

400

Organism A is a unicellular organism with no nucleus. It is commonly found on surfaces like tabletops and sink faucets. Organism A belongs to this kingdom.

What is Bacteria?

400

Maria writes the following: "The organism Pinus glabra is more closely related to Ilex glabra than it is to Pinus taeda, because they are in the same species."

What's wrong with Maria's explanation?

To be in the same species, BOTH PARTS of the scientific name must be the same. Because Pinus glabra and Pinus taeda are in the same genus, they are most closely related. Pinus glabra and Ilex glabra are not closely related because they are in a different genus.

500

These 2 words describe the system for creating scientific names made by Linnaeus

What is Binomial Nomenclature?

500

Green beetles spend some of their time on leaves, where they lay their eggs, and some of their time on the bark where they find food. Scientists counted beetles on leaves and on bark at 2 different locations:

Location 1: On leaves - 120     On bark - 16

Location 2: On leaves - 44       On bark - 112

Which location probably has more predators?

Location 1 has more predators! Beetles on the leaves are camouflaged from predators. If location 1 has more beetles camouflaging on the leaves, that location probably has more predators.

500

Which animal is the product of artificial selection and how do you know?

The white pigeons have been artificially selected. The ruff of feathers around their neck is not good for flying, and their white color would stand out to predators.

500

Organism X is made of many cells. Each of those cells contains a nucleus and other complex organelles. The cells are also surrounded by a cell wall. You would also need to know THIS before you can put Organism X into a kingdom.

How does Organism X get its food?

Autotroph = Plant; Heterotroph = Fungi

What traits does Deerus magnus have?

Deerus magnus is green, has 4 legs, and no tail.
