it is said that having no khushu' in salah is a leaking bucket. what does that mean and what are consequences for not having khushu'?

lacking khushu’ in salah is like a leaking bucket. the same way as you pour water into a bucket that has holes, a prayer without khushu’ is standing for prayer and praying it but the deed being rejected because you were heedless in your prayer.

Allah said, "فَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلۡمُصَلِّینَ. ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَن صَلَاتِهِمۡ سَاهُونَ. which means "So woe to those who pray, but are heedless of their prayer"

the Prophet ﷺ said, “Indeed a person may pray for sixty years, yet not a single salah of his will be accepted.” and this refers to a person who prays salah without khushu'.

the Prophet  said: “The first thing about which the people will be called to account out of their actions on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. Our Lord, the Exalted, will say to the angels - though He knows better: Look into the prayer of My servant and see whether he has offered it perfectly or imperfectly. If it is perfect, that will be recorded perfect. If it is defective, He will say: See if there are some optional prayers offered by My servant. If there are optional prayers to his credit, He will say: Compensate the obligatory prayer by the optional prayer for My servant. Then all the actions will be considered similarly.”
