How many types of sedimentary rocks are there?
Three.
100
What are the two kinds of igneous rocks?
Extrusive and intrusive.
100
How many rock types can metamorphic rocks be made out of?
All of them, including other kinds of metamorphic rocks.
100
What is the rock cycle?
The process by which rocks are changed, formed and broken down.
100
What kind of rock is shale?
Sedimentary rock.
200
What are the names of the three different groups of sedimentary rocks?
Clastic, organic, and chemical.
200
What is granite, extrusive or intrusive?
Intrusive.
200
What can supply the heat for metamorphic rocks?
Pockets of magma or plate movements.
200
Are there a lot of pathways through the rock cycle, or just one?
Many.
200
In the olden days, what were chalkboards made out of?
Slate.
300
What causes cementation?
Dissolved minerals.
300
What is igneous used for and what kinds of rock are used to do it?
Granite counter tops and obsidian Native American arrowheads.
300
Are metamorphic rocks foliated? And if they are, where does the word "foliated" come from?
Yes, metamorphic rocks are foliated. The word comes from Latin word for leaf.
300
What drives the rock cycle?
Plate movements.
300
What kind of sedimentary rock does organic buildup create?
Organic sedimentary rock.
400
What are three different types of sedimentary rocks, and what kinds of sedimentary rocks are they?
Shale, a clastic rock, coal, an organic rock, and rock salt, a chemical rock.
400
What do crystals have to do with the speed of magma cooling and where do they happen?
Larger crystals are formed underground in intrusive rocks due to slow cooling. Smaller crystals are formed above ground due to fast cooling.
400
What is the main metamorphic rock that people use and what do they use it for?
Marble and they use it for fancy buildings.
400
Can heat and pressure turn a rock through the rock cycle as an igneous rock or a metamorphic one?
A metamorphic. Heat makes an igneous rock, but I said heat and pressure, which makes a metamorphic rock.
400
What rock did the ancient Egyptians value for its durability?
Granite.
500
How are sedimentary rocks formed? (Hint: remember the four steps!)
First, the rock gets eroded. Then, it is deposited into a river, lake, or ocean. Next, it gets squeezed into a harder substance. Finally, cementation occurs. Dissolved minerals seep in and cement the packed down grains into rock.
500
How are igneous rocks formed, extrusive and intrusive?
Extrusive rocks are formed by a volcano exploding and lava coming out and cooling, while intrusive rocks are formed by pockets of magma underground cooling.
500
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Rocks underground are melted and squeezed and undergo many changes.
500
What makes an igneous rock? What makes a sedimentary rock? What makes a metamorphic rock? What makes magma?
Magma cooling makes igneous rock. Erosion makes a sedimentary rock. Heat and pressure makes a metamorphic rock. Melting rock makes magma.
500
Which rock forms in water and what forms of water does it form in?
Sedimentary rocks form in rivers, lakes, and oceans.
