What is the difference between a misplaced modifier and a dangling modifier?

A misplace modifier belongs in the sentence, but is in the wrong place and a dangling modifier is not supposed to be in the sentence because the sentence is missing the intended modifier.

The playground at the park is covered with litter. It’s not a nice place to be anymore. More trash cans are needed, and people need to start cleaning up after themselves.

Staying up late can lead to a lack of restful sleep. Not getting enough sleep has some potentially harmful effects. Without proper rest, a person’s brain cannot function at its best. The same is true for the body.

The dodo bird used to roam in large flocks across America.  Interestingly, the dodo wasn’t startled by gun shot.  Because of this, frontiersmen would kill entire flocks in one sitting.  Unable to sustain these attacks, the dodo was hunted to extinction.
