What is morning choice time?

Upon completing your morning arrival routines, you will have some choice activities to pick from so that we can ease into our school day in a positive way.

100

What do you do when you arrive?

Greet your teacher. Hang belongings in your cubby. Put your chair down. Turn in homework and/or notes. Move your magnet to a morning choice activity. Begin morning choice activity.
100

How do you walk in the hallways?

You walk in a quietly and straight line. Other classes are learning and we do not want to disrupt them.

100

Where is the pencil sharpener?

On the counter near the windowsill. PENCILS ONLY in the sharpener please.

I heard that we have a 6 day specialist schedule. Why?

There are now 6 specials that we will rotate through. Music, Art, Health, P.E., Library, and Technology. This means that each week, you will not have one of the 6 specials listed. There is a calendar at the front of the room to help all of us learn this new routine! Sneakers on P.E. and health days!

200

What is the book-a-day poster?

Each day of the school year, Mrs. Sharples (and later on in the year, students who wish to volunteer) will read a picture book to the class. By the end of the year, we will have read 180 picture books together!

200

How do you ask for help in class?

You may ask a classmate or a teacher. It is ALWAYS okay to ask for help.

200

What is quiet time?

A 10 minute block of time directly following recess. This is a time to regulate our bodies so that we can get into learning mode.

200
What supplies are shared amongst the whole class?

Markers, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, and scissors. You can find all of them on the bookshelves near the cubby area.

200

What time are specials? Do we have explorations?

Specials are from 10:05-10:45 each day. We have explorations on Day 3 of our 6 day specials cycle.
300

Do we have snack time?

Yes, snack will be after special (around 10:45) each day. Sometimes we will have snack before special, but Mrs. Sharples will always let you know on the daily agenda when you come in in the morning.

300

When can I use the bathroom?

Before morning choice, during snack, during quiet time. Bathroom signal, sign out.

300

What happens if we have indoor recess?

You may use any of the morning choice items or games in our classroom, draw, color, or read. I will also have a movie playing for those who want to sit and relax or listen to it in the background. Indoor voices are expected. There are no ball throwing or rolling games in order to make sure everyone is safe.

300

Will we be using chrome books?

YES! We have our own chrome book cart. You will be assigned a slot and chrome book number that will be yours for the entire year.

300

What are our dismissal routines?

Bring your backpack and any other belongings that are going home with you to your desk. Make sure you have your homework planner and take home folder in your backpack. Check with your tablemates. Sit at your seat and do a quiet time activity until you are dismissed. When you are dismissed, put your chair up.

400

How will I know our schedule for the day?

There is a daily agenda posted in the front of the classroom next to the touch view.

400

When can I sharpen my pencil?

Before school, snack, during independent working time, quiet time, or dismissal.

400

I see that there are different types of desks and seats in the classroom. When can we use them?

In J16 there are flexible seating options such as: stools, a standing desk, and some different types of lap desks. You may also sit on the counter. Let's read the flexible seating expectations together.

If you cannot see the teacher from where you are sitting then you need to choose another spot (ex: no one sits in the sink area).

400

Do we have class jobs?

Yes. Class jobs will change every 2 weeks. We will go over them and they will be posted on the whiteboard next week.

500

When do we have lunch and recess?

Fifth grade lunch is at 12:45. Recess is directly after that and ends at 1:30.
500

How do students line up?

Make sure your belongings are put away and chairs are pushed in. In a straight line (one student behind another), starting at the cart and moving towards  the chrome book cart. There are no assigned spots unless needed.

500

Do we have homework in fifth grade?

Yes. You can expect to have a few math practice problems most nights for homework, as well as be expected to read for 20 minutes or more each night (Monday-Thursday).

We will have a designated time in which we will all write our homework down in our planners together :)
