What is a proton?
A proton is a positively charged particle
What is the Atomic Number?
The identity of an atom is determined by the number of protons in its nucleus called atomic number.
What is a Periodic Table?
We call it the periodic table because it shows a periodic, or repeating, pattern of properties of the elements.
What is radioactivity?
The process by which atoms produce energy and particles.
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a pair of shared electrons between two atoms
What is a neutron?
A neutron is an uncharged particle
What I the atomic mass number?
The atomic mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus
What is the term reactive?
The term reactive indicates how likely an element is to undergo a chemical change.
What is half-life?
The amount of time that it takes for one-half of the atoms in a particular sample to decay.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is a group of atoms held together by covalent bonds
What is a nucleus?
The combination of protons and neutrons
What is an isotope?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons
What are metals?
Metals are elements that conduct electricity and heat well and have shiny appearance. Metals can be shaped easily by pounding, bending, or being drawn into a long wire. Except for mercury, which is a liquid, metals are solids at room temperature.
What is a chemical formula?
A chemical formula uses these chemical symbols to represent the atoms of the elements and their ratios in a chemical compound
What is a polar covalent bonds?
A polar covalent bond in which the electrons are shared unequally
What is an electron?
They are negatively charged particles that move around outside the nucleus
What is the atomic mass?
The atomic mass of the atoms of an element is the average mass of all the element's isotopes
What are nonmetals?
A nonmetals are the elements to the right side of the periodic table. They are gases at room temperature, and one-bromine-is a liquid. The solid nonmetals often have dull surfaces and cannot be shape by hammering or drawing into wires. Nonmetals are generally poor conductors of heat and electric current.
What is a subscript?
A subscript is a number written to the right of a chemical symbol and slightly below it
The equal sharing that allows the electrons to move easily among the atoms of the metal
What is an ion?
An ion is formed when an atom loses or gains one or more electrons
What is a group? What is a period?
A group is the elements in a column and they are labeled by a number at the top of the column. A period is each horizontal row in the periodic table, properties of elements change in predictable way from one end of a period to the other.
What are metalloids?
Metalloids are elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals.
What is an ionic bond?
The force of attraction between positive and negative ions
What is a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction produces new substances by changing the way in which atoms are arranged. Bonds between atoms are broken and new bonds form between different atoms.
