What is Static Electricity?
It's the "shock" that happens when they're is an uneven amount of electrons and protons --> More electrons!
Same type that makes lightning!
DOES NOT FLOW! --> One single discharge
What is a conductor?
What is an insulator?
Conductor = Electrons are free to move around, making it easier when electricity is added for them to move from the negative to positive terminal.
Insulator = Electrons are stuck close together to the nuclei so they can't freely move when electricity is added.
What are the 4 forms of energy?
1) Chemical
2) Electrical
3) Mechanical
4) Thermal
Are fossil fuels renewable or non renewable?
Non Renewable!
Which one flows? Electrons or Protons?
Only Electrons! NEVER protons! Protons are stuck in the nucleus :)
What are protons and electrons?
What does it mean if something is neutral?
Protons = Positive charge
Electrons = Negative Charge
Neutral = Same amount of electrons and protons
** Most objects are neutral!
What are semiconductors?
What are superconductors?Semiconductors = In between a conductor and insulator
Superconductor = Are perfect conductors!
What is energy dissipation?
it is the energy that is lost, usually as heat, when a device is transforming energy
What are some renewable forms for generating electricity?
Nuclear
Geothermal
Biomass
Cogeneration
Water
What is a series circuit?
Only one pathway for the current to follow.
If one device is removed or stops working, the whole circuit stops working.
What are dry cells?
What are wet cells?
Dry cells = batteries! The chemicals used are in a paste
The chemical reaction in the cell releases free electrons which travel from the negative terminal to the positive one. The dry cell is made up of electrodes in an electrolyte.
Wet cells = the electrolyte is in a liquid (Usually acid)
The acid eats away at the electrode that then gives it a negative charge. Electrons travel again from negative terminal to positive.
What are resistors?
They are a type of conductor that allows current to pass but slows it down by adding resistance.
What is Efficiency?
It's the amount of useful energy that comes out versus the total amount of energy that went in.
Is solar energy renewable?
Yes!
What do the laws of electrical charges tell us?
That opposite charges attract!
That the like charges repel each other
What is an electrical current?
The steady flow of charged particles!
This is the type of electricity needed to operate electrical devices!
What are the different tools to measure electricity?
Voltmeter, Ammeter, Galvanometer, Multimeters
How can we increase efficiency?
By reducing friction and insulating the device from heat loss!
Why is non renewable resources so bad?
The chemicals released create global warming, can ruin ecosystems, release pollution and kill ocean creatures!
What 2 conditions need to be met to make current electricity?
1) The current needs an energy Source
2) It needs a complete path or circuit
What are some things you can do to stay safe so you don't get electrocuted?
- Never handle electrical devices near water or when wet.
- Don't use devices with frayed wires.
- Never put anything else in an electrical outlet.
- Pull on the plug, NOT the wire.
-What are the 4 parts of a circuit? What does each one do?
Conductor - Provides path for current
Source - Provides energy for the circuit
Switch - Controls current flow
Load - Converts electricity into other forms of energy
What is chemical energy?
Energy found in chemicals - Including food!
How is information passed from one computer to another?
Electrical signals are sent from the one computer to the other.
What are circuit drawing?
Symbols that tell you what the circuit will look like!
