Name three resources a habitat should have in order for an animal to survive.

Food, water, shelter, and air are all valid answers.

Why do polar bears have dense, white fur?

To protect themselves from the cold Arctic weather.

As you go higher into the atmosphere, does air pressure increase or decrease?
Decrease
200

What types of teeth are good for eating plant-type foods, seeds, and leaves that need grinding? What types of teeth are good for tearing off piece of meat?

Flat teeth are good for grinding food, while sharp teeth are good for tearing off meat.

200

How do cacti (cactuses) use their spikes to survive?

Their spikes make them very difficult to eat, so it limits the number of predators they have.

200

What is a habitat?

A habitat is where a living thing make its home.

300

From which direction (north, south, east, or west) does the rise? In which direction does it set?

Rises in the east, sets in the west.

Describe the structure of a food web (i.e. where are predators in the chart, where are prey in the chart?). If a species at the bottom of the food web goes extinct (dies out/disappears), how does this affect the rest of the food web?

In a food web, plants are usually on the very bottom. The next level up contains animals that eat those plants. The levels up from there consist of predators that eat first-level animals. If a species at the bottom of a food web goes extinct, a cascade effect can take place. This means that animals throughout the whole food web may also go extinct since they have no food to eat.

What are the three common skills that predators use to catch pray? (Hint: think of the card game we played with the little bubbles.)

Detecting, fighting, and chasing

300

What is the name for parts of an animal like arms, legs, fins, and wings that extend out from the body?

Limbs

400

Why are certain parts of the Earth colder during different times of the year?

Earth's axial tilt and the angle sunlight hits different areas on Earth.

400

What is competition? How can competition increase and decrease in a habitat?

Competition is the process by which living things compete for essential resources. Competition can increase in a habitat if the number of predators who eat the same pray increases. Competition can decrease in a habitat if the number of prey increases while the number of predators decreases or stays the same.

400

What are three common skills prey use to protect themselves from predators?

Hiding, fighting, and fleeing

400

What is the tool used to measure air pressure called? How does it work?

A barometer is a tool used to measure air pressure. When air pressure decreases, the liquid level in a barometer drops. When air pressure increases, the liquid level in a barometer rises.

Why does a bag of chips pop as you go higher and higher into the sky in an airplane? Include details in your answer!

The air outside of the chip bag decreases in air pressure as the plane gets higher and higher. As a result, the air inside the chip bag begins to expand until it eventually pops. In other words, the difference in air pressure between the air outside and inside the chip bag.

500

Name three adaptations real-life animals have and explain why they have these adaptations.

Can be various answers.

500

Name two groups of animals who cooperate (either with their own species or with other species) and describe how they cooperate.

Answers may vary, but here are some examples:

Dolphins work together to catch pray.

Wolves work together to catch pray.

Penguins huddle together during winter months to keep each other warm.

Ants of different shapes and sizes live in colonies, where they have different jobs.

Meerkats take turns watching for predators.
