Explain what matter is AND name the three states of matter.

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. The 3 states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

100

What is the word for when a solid changes to a gas?

Sublimation

100

If a bike left outside in the rain makes the bike rusty, is it a physical change or chemical change and why?

Rust is a chemical change because the bike cannot be changed back to not being rusty.

100

What is the chemical symbol for Iron?

The symbol is Fe.

100

Where on the Periodic Table are the Noble Gases? What is most important about the Noble Gases?

The six noble gases are found together in the same group (column) on the periodic table - at the far right of the Periodic Table. They are the most stable (least reactive). The other elements want to be like their nearest noble gas.

200

What are TWO ways that a gas is different from a solid?

1. A gas has particles that are moving very fast 2. A solid has particle that are vibrating 3. A solid has a definite shape that cannot change 4. The gas particles are far apart and the solid particles are very close together

200

The vocabulary word for changing water to a gas is...

Evaporation

200

When water freezes to make ice. Is this a physical or chemical change? Explain your answer.

It is a physical change because the water is changing its state of matter; it is changing from a liquid to a solid.

200

What is the symbol for Helium and how is Helium used?

The symbol for Helium is He. Helium is most commonly known for being used to fill balloons to make them float. It also has uses in deep sea diving, welding, and filling blimps

200

Which element group on the Periodic Table is the most reactive? (They like to blow up/explode)

The Alkali Metals. They are located on the far left of the Periodic Table.

300

What are two ways that the states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) are all similar (the same).

-They are all made of particles -They all have mass -They all have volume

300

Describe the relationship between a liquid and a solid. This means, what happens when a liquid turns into a solid and when a solid turns into a liquid? (Be careful! This requires TWO answers).

A liquid to a solid is melting. A solid to a liquid of is freezing.

300

I took a piece of paper and rolled it up into a ball. Is this a physical change or chemical change. Explain your answer.

It is a physical change because a new substance is not formed. It is just changing its shape. There is no new odor, color or other reaction that occurred.

300

What is an element? Give an example of one element.

An element is one type of pure substance found on the Periodic Table. An example of an element is Hydrogen (H).

300

What is the atomic number?

the number of protons in the nucleus (which is the same as the number of electrons in the atom).

400

Is water (H2O) an atom or a molecule? Give one reason for your answer.

It is a molecule. H2O is more than two atoms that are bonded together, which forms a molecule.

400

I opened a cold can of Coca-Cola outside on a hot day. After a while, water starts to collect on the outside of my Coke can. What is a vocabulary word that describes this?

This is condensation because it is a gas turning to a liquid.

400

What are three examples of chemical change properties?

-Odor -New color -Creates bubbling -A new substance is formed

400

What is the most abundant element in the human body?

Oxygen (O)

400

How many elements are on the present periodic table of elements? Of those ____ how many of them occur in nature?

118 elements on the periodic table of elements and 94 of them occur in nature.

500

Is NaCl (salt) an element or a compound? Give a reason for your answer.

It is a compound. An element is a single pure substance; each of which are found on the Periodic Table. A compound is two or more elements together.

500

Explain the difference between translucent, transparent and opaque.

Translucent is when light can pass through (you can see through it a little) For example a green bottle of Sprite is translucent. transparent is when light can fully pass through and you can clearly see through it. For example a window is transparent, so are my glasses for reading. opaque is when no light can pass through and you cannot see through it. For example, a book or piece of book are opaque.

500

Is lighting a match a physical or chemical change? Explain your answer.

Lighting a match is a chemical change because there is a new odor, a change of color, and the burnt match cannot be changed back.
