What is Energy?

The ability to do work or cause change.

100

What is work?

a force moving an object that causes that object to move in the direction of the force.

100

The definition of science:

The study of the natural world

100

Energy cannot be ________ or ______________.

created or destroyed

100

Independent Variables are...

The part of the experiment that is being changed or manipulated to see if it has an effect.

200

What are the four types of energy from this chapter?

thermal, electrical, mechanical, radiant

200

Energy can be transformed or __________.

converted into one form or another.

200

Who Am I?: Energy an object has due to its motion and position,

Mechanical Energy

200

Dependent Variables are...

The part of the experiment that you measure. It changes based on the effect of the Independent variable.

200

Observations are....

Information obtained through the senses.

300

Who Am I?: energy of heat through CONTACT

Thermal Energy

300

Who Am I?: energy that travels in waves, like sunlight, microwaves, or X-rays.

Radiant Energy

300

Who am I examples of?:

a hammer
a windmill
a bicycle
a bow/arrow

mechanical energy

Mr.  Krabbs  wants  to  make  Bikini  Bottom  a  nicer  place  to  live.  He  has  created  a  new  sauce  that  he thinks  will  reduce  the  production  of  body  gas  associated  with  eating  crabby  patties  from  the  Krusty Krab.  He  recruits  100  customers  with  a  history  of  gas  problems.  He  has  50  of  them  (Group  A)  eat crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks just like new sauce but is really just mixture of mayonnaise and food coloring. Both groups were told that they  were  getting  the  sauce  that  would  reduce  gas  production.

Constant is....
Independent Varable is.....
Dependent Variable is......

Constant: feeding the volunteers

IV: Different sauces

DV: Gas production

300

Constants are...

Conditions that stay the same in the experiment

400

Who Am I?: Energy associated with flowing electrons.

Electrical Energy

400

Definition of Electrical Energy

Energy associated with flowing electrons, like static electricity or current electricity.

400

Who am I examples of?:

heat from a fire
an iron
a stove/oven
a toaster
hoding a cup of hot chocolate

thermal energy

Sponge  Bob  notices  that  his  pal  Gary  is  suffering  from  slimotosis,  which  occurs  when  the  shell develops a nasty slime and gives off a horrible odor. His friend Patrick tells him that rubbing seaweed on the shell is the perfect cure, while Sandy says that drinking Dr. Kelp will be a better cure. Sponge Bob decides to test this cure by rubbing Gary with seaweed for 1 week and having him drink Dr. Kelp.  After a week of treatment, the slime is gone and Gary’s shell smells better.

Constant is....
Independent Varable is.....
Dependent Variable is......

Constant: treating/caring for Gary

IV: types of treatments

DV: Smell of the shell.

400

An inference is...

A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.

500

Definition of Mechanical Energy

Energy an object has due to its motion and position, like wind pwoer or sound.

500

Definition of Thermal Energy

energy of heat through CONTACT, like a hot grill or stove.

500

Definition of Radiant Energy

energy that travels in waves, like sunlight, microwaves, or X-rays.

500

What type of energy conversion is envoled?

Toaster

Treadmill

Electric to Thermal

Electric to Mechanical

500

Evidence is...

Information collected during a scientific investigation.
