Mosses are not vascular plants. They don't have tubes that can carry food and water through the plant. Most mosses live in moist places. Food and water can only pass slowly from one cell to another to get to different parts of the plant. All the cells of a moss plant nee to be near water, so they can't grow very tall. Mosses don't have roots or leaves. The green parts of the plants use energy from the sun to make sugar. Some grow on the ground and some grow on tree trunks or decaying logs. Some grow in soil that collects in cracks on rocks or sidewalks. Moss plants are seedless and flowerless. They reproduce by forming tiny cells that can grow into new plants. Each of the tiny cells is called a spore.

He was a Swedish biologist that developed a way to name organisms and show relationships about 250 years ago. He gave each kind of organism a two-word name. One word was the name scientists use for the organism's genus. The other was the name they use for its species. His system is helpful for classifying organisms because scientific names help avoid confusion. Sometimes people call an organism by several different names, but it has only one scientific name. Scientists all over the world use that name.

Ferns are flowerless, seedless plants that reproduce by forming spores. The spores grow in clusters on the underside of the fern's leaves, and the wind can carry the spores far away from the parent plant. A new plant could grow from each spore that lands in a favorable place. Ferns are vascular plants. Tubes inside their stems and leaves carry food and water to all the cells of the plant. Water and nutrients move more easily through the long tubes in ferns than they do from one cell to another in mosses. Ferns can be tiny to huge. Most grow in warm, moist climates in damp, shady places. Some can grow all over the world, even in dry, cold places. Many have long leaves, which use energy from the sunlight to make sugar.

Snakes are vertebrates. They are reptiles. Reptiles breathe with lungs all their lives. They have tough scales to protect their bodies. Most reptiles lay eggs on land. The eggs don't dry out because they have leathery shells. Some reptiles hatch from eggs inside the mother's body.
