What are the levels (categories) of the classification system? BONUS: If you name one of the Domains, every person on your team gets one candy!
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species are the categories!
Name three different species that are found at a pond.
Insects, plants, reptiles, amphibians, etc.
What is the process where plants turn sunlight into sugars
Photosynthesis
Are mammals and birds warm-blooded or cold-blooded?
Warm-blooded
Can energy be lost?
NO... it is transferred

small bacteria, algae, micro organisms, euglena, amoeba, diatoms
When we all went to the farm, we read at the garden and then toured and dug into the Blumrick's garden. Recall one item in the garden and a fact that was discussed about this item.
Ginger, Turmeric- roots that we dug out carefully
Lettuce turning to seed
Strawberries- need lots of water
Tops and bottoms. Roots vegetables versus tops
Recall one fact that Ms. Sam taught you about chickens when we observed chickens at the Blumrick's home.
-incubators used to keep them warm
-hatchling tooth observed... this is used to break out of their shell
-must be kept in a safe place or else animals may prey on them
-many different varieties of chicken. Some have been mixed together so they are good at laying eggs
Kinetic energy
We read a story called "The Boy Who Grew a Forest". What lesson did we learn from this story?
The boy, Jadav Payeng, took initiative to restore and conserve his habitat. By slowly planting one tree at a time, he created a forest over decades of work. Conservation. Initiative. Perseverance.
What experiment did I show you all to demonstrate what happens at the skin of an amphibian? And what does it show?
The hardboiled egg placed into blue dye. The blue dye soaked into the white part and colored it. Our skin does not absorb water but amphibians have thin skin that allows air and liquids to pass through so they can get more oxygen and water.
What is one type of plant that was grown in your trays?
Squash, flowers, trees, beans
Name 3 out of the 5 features of a bird.
1. Two wings and two legs
2. Feathers
3. Lays eggs on land
4. Breathes air with lungs
5. Warm blooded
What is the name for stored energy?
Potential energy
Name what source of energy the man in Malawi used to create electricity AND name one fact you learned about this man.
William Kamkwamba. Used wind energy through a windmill
Name 3 out of the 4 features of a fish.
1. Fish have backbones
2. Fish breath with gills
3. Fish have fins to help them move
4. Scales cover a fish's skin for protection
In what part of the cell does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplast
Name the 5 features of a mammal.
What is: 1. Has hair or fur
2. Breathes air with lungs
3. Gives birth to live young
4. Babies drink milk from mother after birth
5. Warm blooded
Name 2 sources of renewable energy and 2 sources of non-renewable energy.
Non-renewable: crude oil/petroleum, natural gas, coal/fossil fuels, uranium
Renewable: biomass, wind, water, solar, geothermal, hydropower
What did you learn about Alice Waters and what did she hope all people would understand about eating?
Alice Waters grew up with fresh summer food and then during the remaining months, her family ate packaged food. When she went to France, she realized that she loved fresh food and she wanted everyone to eat fresh made food- local, grown in a garden and recognizing the cycle of life of the food. She wants everyone to understand the seed to table concept and how important it is for our bodies and the earth and world.
Name 3 of the 5 features of an amphibian.
2. Are born in the water and breathe with gills when young
3. Have moist skin
4. Are cold-blooded
5. Undergo metamorphosis to develop lungs for breathing air
6CO2 + 6H2O --> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Name the stages of the life cycle of a chicken. Hint: There are 5 stages we learned.
Egg --> Embryo --> Hatchling --> Chick --> Adult hen
Name 3 types of energy (can be kinetic or potential). Example: gravitational energy
Potential: Mechanical energy, Chemical energy, Nuclear energy (sun), gravitational energy
Kinetic: thermal energy (heating soup, melting ice cream), electromagnetic energy (radiowaves, etc), kinetic energy, electrical energy, sound energy, radiant energy
