Ecosystems
What is bio invasion
Taking food or nutrients from the native species
What are the 3 types of soils and what are they
Sandy soil-has large mineral particles, water can run through it very easy
Clay soil-has small mineral particles, can hold water and nutrients very well but air cannot easily pass through it
Loam soil-balance between mineral particles and organic particles, crumbly like cake and has plants of nutrients of and holds water well
What is convection
A way of transferring heat energy when liquid or gas particles move from one area to another
Dynamic load vs static load
Dynamic load-a load that moves or changes over time ex. Human walking on bridge
Static load-a non moving or non changing load ex.the weight of the bridge
Fracture vs cleavage
Fracture-breaks along rough jagged edges
Cleavage-breaks along smooth flat lines
Carnivore vs omnivore vs herbivore
Carnivore-meat eater
Omnivore- eats both plants and meat
Herbivore- eats only plants
What’s pollination
When pollen is transferred from the anther (man part) to the stigma (women part) and fertilized the ovaries of the flower
Temperature vs thermal energy
What are they
Thermal energy-The total kinetic energy of all the particles in a substance
Temperature- The measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance
Shell vs frame vs solid
Shell- had a solid outer surface rounded or flat in shape has a hollow over area ex igloo
Frame-has rigid arrangement of connected parts that are fastened together
Solid- has a strong material and is not hollow inside ex hockey puck
What are trace and cast fossils
Trace fossils-a cavity or track left behind by an organism
Cast fossil- filled in cavities left by the original organic bodies
Mutualism vs Parasitism vs Communalism
Mutualism-both living things benefit
Parasitism- one species benefits while the other is harmed
Communalism-when one species benefits but the other is neither benefited or harmed
What is selective breeding
Selective breeding-the process of selecting plants with specific traits and reproducing them
Conductors vs insulators
Conductor-a way of transferring heat energy through substances that are in direct contact with each other Ex:metals
Insulators-materials that don’t allow east transfer of heat Ex:cork, wood, plastic
External force vs internal force
External force-a force applied to the structure by something else ex. Wind people
Internal force- a force that one part of the structure exerts on another part of the same structure
Magma vs lava
Magma-melted rocks under the ground
Lava-melted rock and ash on the earth surface
Food web-linking food chains
Food chains-starts with original food source like a producer like grass then an arrow points to a consumer like a rabbit then gets eaten by wolf and ends with a decomposed
Osmosis vs transpiration vs capillary action
Capillary action-when water flows through roots without external forces like gravity
Osmosis- water from the soil enters root cells and water moves from high soil to low roots or high concentration to low concentration
Transpiration- evaporation of water from the surface of the plant.
What’s a solid,liquid,gas when in a container
Gas-shape of container, volume of container
Liquid-shape of container,free surface,fixed volume
Solid-holds shapes,fixed volume
Fixed joint vs mobile joint vs joint committee
Fixed joint-joint that does not move
Mobile joint-joint that allows the structure to move at certain points
Joint-where parts of a structure come together ex. Nails
Converging boundary vs transform boundary vs diverging boundary
Converging boundary-2 of earths plates moving toward each other
Transform boundary-2 of earths plates sliding past each other
Diverging boundary-2 of earths plates moving apart
What are some ways Animals die and what is the definition of that word
Threatened-living things numbers declining
Endangered-at risk of extinction
Extinct- all of one species dies out and does not exist anymore
What are pesticides and what are the pots and cons
Pesticide- a chemical that kills insects
Pros-protects crops from harmful insects
Cons-pesticide residue can be on grocery’s,when pesticides are used on a Insects for a long period of time insects can become immune to the pesticides
Heat energy vs solar energy
Heat energy-energy from the movement of tiny particles that makes up all matter
Solar energy-solar cells are arranged in panels which are connected to from a solar array these panels change solar energy to electricity
What a margin of safety
The limits within which a structure safety performance is felt to be acceptable ex. Speed limit
Biological weathering vs chemical weathering vs mechanical weathering
Biological weathering-wearing away by living things
Chemical weathering-chemicals break down the minerals in the rocks ex. Acid rain
Mechanical weathering-rocks crumbling due to rain or wind
