What is the flow of electrons from one place to another?
Electricity
100
Where is the magnetic field of a magnet strongest?
At the poles.
100
What is the theory for how the universe began?
The Big Bang theory.
100
What are the layers of the sun (in order from inside)?
Core > Radiative zone > convective zone > photosphere > chromosphere > corona
100
What is the carbon cycle?
The carbon cycle begins with photosynthesis. It cycles in short term as well as long term, through ocean sediment, coal, oil, and natural gas. Nitrogen , phosphorous, and sulfur also cycle.
200
What is the measure of the energy available to move electrons?
Voltage
200
What three types of metal can be easily magnetized?
Iron, nickel, cobalt.
200
What are stars mainly composed of?
Hydrogen and Helium
200
What are the earth's layers and what are they made of?
iron and nickle core: inner is solid, outer is liquid; mantle, crust.
200
What is the hydrologic cycle?
evaporation > condensation > precipitation > runoff/infiltration
300
Which semiconductor is formed by adding phosphorous and provides the flow of electrons?
The n-type semiconductor.
300
What happens when an electric current passes through a coil of wire, and produces a magnetic field inside a coil?
An electromagnet is made.
300
Name the stars in order of size: white dwarf, giant, main sequence, neutron, supergiant.
Neutron, white dwarf, main sequence, giant, supergiant.
300
When are the equinoxes and solstices?
Spring: March 21/22 (vernal equinox); Summer: June 21/22 (summer solstice); Fall : Sept. 22/23 (autumnal equinox); Winter: Dec. 21/22. (Winter solstice)
300
What are the "ages" of streams and their characteristics?
Young: downcutting, erodes stream bed, high velocity, gradient high. Maturity: gradient intermediate, river has meanders, tributaries, erodes banks. Old age: low gradient, base level, transporting eroded materials, wide floodplain, wide meanders, levees.
400
What two types of electrical circuits are there?
Simple series and parallel.
400
What is electromagnetic induction?
When a magnet moves near a wire and moves relative to one another.
400
How does a sun-like star go from a nebula to death? (long answer...=P)
It starts in a cloud of dust of hydrogen and helium. The nebula collapses and produces a protostar. When temps. reach 10 million C, it becomes a star. It will live billions of years as a main sequence star, then it will become a giant or supergiant, because the star begins to burn helium. Once the helium is used, it collapses into a white dwarf. It collapses more and becomes a supernova, which becomes a neutron star.
400
What was the hypothesis of the moon's creation?
The Giant Impact Hypothesis: Mars sized object hit Earth early and knocked off material which became moon.
400
What is groundwater?
Any water that soaks into the ground, and it is the most important source of freshwater.
500
How is electrical power calculated?
P=I*V
500
What is the order of the electromagnetic spectrum?
Visible light, TV and radio waves, microwaves, infrared, UV, X-rays, gamma rays.
500
What is the difference between absolute and apparent magnitude?
Absolute magnitude is the brightness of a star at 32.6 light years away, apparent magnitude is as seen from earth.
500
What is a solar and lunar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is when the sun is covered by the moon's shadow, and a lunar eclipse is when the moon is covered by the Earth's shadow.
500
what is an aquifer and aquitard?
Aquifer: highly porous and permeable, ex. sandstone and limestone. Aquitard: low porosity or low permeability, ex. shale.
