What is matter?

Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space

100

What happens at the nanoscale when a substance dissolves into a liquid?

The molecules of the liquid are attracted to the molecules of the substance and it spreads evenly into the mixture
100

What kind of force is gravity?

Gravity is a force that is pulling down towards the ground.

200

Why cant we see salt when it dissolves into water?

Because the salt molecules are evenly spread throughout the water.

200

What would someone be testing by holding a magnet above different substances?

Testing to see which objects are magnetic

200

Does the amount of matter change when two substances are combined?

No, the total matter doesn't change the matter of the two substances is just mixed together
300

How can we tell when a chemical reaction has occurred?

There is a new substance created with new observable properties.

300

Does the amount of matter change when a substance changes state? ex. When ice melts or when liquid water freezes?

No! The amount of of matter (and the mass) stay the same.

300

Why would we want to know the properties of 3 unknown substances?

So we could tell the 3 substances apart.

400

What are some of the properties of the different states of water? (Describe the properties)

Ice: It is a solid, it is cold

Water: It is a liquid, we can see through it

Water Vapor: It is a gas, it is in the air, it looks like a cloud

400

After a chemical reaction has the amount of matter changed?

Nope, it has just changed form

We mix salt into a cup of water and it dissolves. How could we prove that the salt is still in the water even though we cannot see it? (2 part answer, I want both parts)

There are 2 ways:

1) Let the water evaporate and see if the salt crystals are left behind.

2) Weigh the salt and weigh the water. Combine the two and see if the weight of the mixture is equal to the weights of the two substances.
