What happens when someone gets cold?
The heat in their body transfers out!
Why did we study cups? (1 reason that is practical)
Cheap way and common for us to study thermal energy!
What is the scientific term for watching something/someone?
Observing, observation
Show the parts of a lidded cup! (5 parts minimum)
cup walls, base, lid, straw, straw hole
Which type of friend gives you energy?
Why? (*extra 300 points if you remember the phrase!)
Bouncy ball/high energy/hot particle
*"You can only give energy if you have energy"
What is the type of thermal energy from the sun called?
radiation
Why did we put a cup in a box?
To see if light changed the temperature.
What is it called when you take notes?
Data collection
Show the side view of a cup with heat escaping quickly!
cup with no lid and heat going from base of lid, to water, to air and up and out beyond cup walls
How does an igloo connect to what we learned about thermal energy and how it moves?
The entrance was dug deeper down to trap the cold air and the rest was made to allow the smoke out as the heat from the fireplace would warm the place. Snow was packed between the ice to continue to act like glue keeping the igloo together. Body heat inside the igloo as well as fire and being lower in the ground helped to create heat.
How much energy and what temperature are:
bouncy ball particles? (2 answers)
sloth particles? (2 answers)
bouncy ball particles have high energy, are hot
sloth particles have low energy, are cold
How do you make condensation quickly?
Hot and humid weather,
Cold/icy fluid in cup, lid, heat rising in cup and trapped with lid, cool air outside going down and touching cup walls to form condensation
When you have important information, where do you put it?
Make a data table!
What does it look like when we put dye in water:
1) hot water
2) room temperature water
3) cold water
1) color mixed easily and quickly!
2) color mixed slower and not evenly, the color was solid on top and mixing slowly on side
3) color was really slow to mix and in strands!
How are you like a cup? (3 answers)
Energy transfers out of our pores (like holes in the cup)
You are 70% water! like a cup!
You have a lidded cup to try to keep temperature the same.
Why do people get upset with you for leaving the door open when the A.C. is on?
Why do people get upset when you leave the fridge open?
*100 extra points for what arctic animal is going extinct due to the temperatures warming?
Because it lets heat in.
Because it lets heat into the fridge, warming the food.
*Stop killing the polar bears!
Which was the best cup for keeping in the heat? (include key detail for extra 100 points!)
Fancy cup with lid
(*and thermometer plugging lid)
What is a control variable? What is an independent variable? What is a dependent variable?
Control variable: does not change
Independent variable: 1 thing/variable I change
Dependent variable: what we measure
Show the side view of a cup with trapped heat!
Lid on top, cup walls
Heat rising from water and hitting lid and going back down
water
base of cup
What is your lid?
Skin, head, multiple answers
When it is hot and humid outside, and there is water on the outside of my cup, what is it? Why does it happen?
Condensation, the cool wet air (water vapor) outside touches the cold cup walls and clumps together to form water molecules
Do cups sweat? Why or why not?
No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The dyed water did not leak out, that means the water on the outside was not sweat, it was from the air's water vapor!
What are the steps of the scientific method? (7 steps)
1) Question
2) Observations
3) Hypothesis
4) Experiment
5) Data Collection
6) Analysis
7) Conclusion, start again!
Show condensation (make sure to include the weather).
Hot and humid weather,
Cold/icy fluid in cup, lid, heat rising in cup and trapped with lid, cool air outside going down and touching cup walls to form condensation
Which River Civilization used a symbol related to science in their writings? What symbol was it? What story does this relate to?
Indus River Valley, Jars, Indian people said their ancient people said they came from Jars!
