For a fixed amount (fixed mass) of gas, when the volume increases, the pressure __________.
Decreases
Boiling water is a chemical reaction: True or False
False
Name the three states of matter.*
Solid, liquid, and gas
*100 bonus pts if you can name the 4th state of matter
Gas has no definite volume or shape: True or False
True, it fills the space of the container it's in
Particles in any amount of matter are always moving: True or False
True
When forces are balanced the system is in ______.
Equilibrium
A change in color or odor are examples of a chemical reaction: True or False
True
Name a unit of measurement for volume.
Liters, milliliters, fluid ounces, etc.
What is in-between gas particles?
Nothing, void, empty space, etc.
Name one example of a particle
Atom, compound, or molecule
Gas particles apply a _____ when they hit the sides of a container.
Force
What is evidence that a new gas has formed in a chemical reaction?
Bubble, fizz, or fumes
Name a unit of measurement for mass.
Grams, ounces, etc. NOT pounds.
What is it called when a fixed number of gas particles take up less volume due to applied pressure?
Compression
What happens to the amount of particles in a syringe when gas is compressed or expanded?
It does not change
How is pressure measured? (i.e. what is the formula?)*
Force applied over a certain area (P=F/M)
**100 bonus pts if you can name a unit of measure for pressure
When demonstrating the experiment of mixing citric acid and baking soda together, why did my syringe fly off?
There wasn't enough space to hold the new gas that was created.
Air is a compound: True or False
False
What happens to the gas particles when gas expands?
They get further apart.
When I pop a football, what happens to the gas particles inside?
They rush out of the ball to equalize the pressure of the gas inside and outside the ball.
What does high pressure look like at the particle level?
The particles move quicker and hit each other and the walls of the container more.
This happens in every chemical reaction.
A new substance is produced/created
What are the two qualifications that make something matter?*
Has mass and volume (takes up space)
100 bonus pts if you can name something that is not matter
Why does a balloon deflate when you pop it?
The pressure of the gas inside the balloon is higher than the pressure of the air around it.
When the balloon pops, the gas inside wants to become equal in pressure to the gas outside (be in equilibrium). The gas wants to take up more space (escape), thus decreasing the pressure to meet the pressure of the gas outside the balloon.
Describe how gas particles move.
In straight lines that bounce off each other and the container they're contained in.
