Is popping popcorn a physical or chemical change?
Chemical Change
What is a force?
A push or a pull that one object exerts on another object with or without direct contact
What are the four types of precipitation?
Rain, snow, sleet, hail
In an experiment what is an experimental group?
The group that is actually receiving the change, the group that is being tested, has an independent variable
What is the process of erosion?
The process by which rock, soil, and other weathered earth materials are moved from one place to another
Is a rotting banana a physical or chemical change?
Chemical Change
What is friction?
A force that opposes motion through direction contact
What force causes precipitation to fall?
Gravity
Why do experiments have control groups?
To measure or compare against a group that’s
normal; serves as a reference for the comparison
What is the process of weathering?
Rocks and other surfaces are broken down
Is dissolving salt a physical or chemical change? Why?
Physical Change because a new substance is not created.
What is gravity?
A force that pulls objects down to Earth.
What part of the water cycle causes water droplets to form on the outside of cold glass of water?
Condensation
What is a hypothesis?
A statement saying what you think the end result will be; an educated guess.
Why are some stars brighter than others?
Because some stars are closer to Earth while others are farther away.
Is roasting a marshmallow a physical or chemical change? Why?
Chemical Change because roasting is changing the marshmallow into a new substance.
What are unbalanced forces? Give and example.
Forces that are unequal in size and may or may not be opposite in direction. A scale with two different weights in it.
How does the temperature change what happens during the water cycle?
As it gets hotter, more water evaporates into the air and as it gets cooler more water condenses.
What’s the difference between an opinion and an observation?
Opinions include personal beliefs while observations are gathered through the senses and/or scientific instruments
What’s the difference between inner and outer planets?
Inner: little to no moons, no rings, rocky, before the asteroid belt, closer to the Sun, shorter revolutions
Outer: Many moons, rings, gaseous, after the asteroid belt, farther from the sun, longer revolutions
Explain the key differences between a chemical change and a physical change.
A physical change is when matter changes its form or appearance but remains the same substance. A chemical change is when matter transforms into one or more completely different substances.
If an object isn’t able to move, what type of force is happening? Why?
Balanced Forces because the forces cancel each other out creating no motion.
Explain what is the water cycle?
The continuous movement of water through the environment by evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff.
What types of observations can be made during an experiment? 2 types needed
Qualitative: based on senses, describes characteristics, description based
Quantitative: Based on numbers or measurements; uses tools or instruments
What are the 4 spheres of the Earth and what do they do?
Atmosphere (air), Hydrosphere (water), Biosphere (life), Geosphere (rocks and solid Earth)
