What is weight?

Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object.

100

What are the three states of matter?

Solid, liquid, and gas.

100

What does condense mean?

Condense means to change from a liquid to a solid.

100

If I travel 300 kilometers in 3 hours, how fast am I going?

I am going 100 km/h.

100

What is a force?

Force is a push or pull.

200

What causes objects to sink or float?

Density.

200

Does the volume of a solid change when it’s put in a container?

No, the volume doesn't change.

200

What happens when you add energy to a solid?

It melts!

200

What is position?

The position of an object is the location of an object.

200

What are the special words for magnets push and pull?

Magnets attract/repel magnetic objects.

300

How is mass different from weight?

Mass is the amount of matter in an object and does not change, unlike weight which is the pull of gravity on an object and can change if the object experiences different gravity.

300

How are the states of matter different?

They all have different properties. Solids are matter that has a certain shape and volume. Liquids are matter that has a certain volume but no certain shape. Gases are matter that has no certain shape or volume.

300

What is the difference between a solution and a mixture? Give an example for each.

A solution is a mixture where they dissolve and mix evenly, for example, sugar + water. A mixture is any mix of two items, where they don't mix evenly, for example, sand + water.

300

Tell me the position of 2 things in the room using position words.

ANSWERS VARY use - over, under, next to, on, left of, right of, etc.

300

If I push a paperclip away with a magnet, is that a contact force? Why or why not?

No, it is not a contact force because the magnet is not touching the paperclip.

400

What is the difference between the volume and mass of an object? How can we measure it?

The volume of an object is how much space an object takes up, which is measured with a beaker or graduated cylinder. In contrast, the mass of an object is the measure of the amount of matter in an object, which is measured with a pan balance.

400

Why do solids stay the same shape?

Solids stay the same shape because their particles are packed closely together, they don't have room to move around.

400

What are some differences and similarities between a physical change and a chemical change?

A physical change is a change in the way matter looks, it changes the form of matter like tearing or folding but a chemical change is a change that causes different kinds of matter to form, it can change color, form gas, or emit light or heat. Both change how matter looks.

400

Name 3 of the 4 ways something can move and 3 things that make those motions.

Things can move in a zig zag, straight line, round and round, or back and forth. Answers may vary.

400

What force holds you to the ground? Is it a contact force?

The force is gravity. It is not a contact force because gravity doesn't touch you.

500

Why do ice cubes float?

Ice cubes float because they have less density than liquid water. The water expands when it turns to ice, and it has more space between the molecules.

500

What are the similarities and differences between boiling and evaporating?

Boiling is the heating of liquid to where bubbles form and rapidly turn into gas. Evaporating is when a liquid turns to gas, but not as quickly as boiling.

500

Does a smooth surface, like glass, increase or decrease friction? Explain.

It decreases friction because it is easier for an object to slide on a smooth surface.
