What is marine biology?
Formed from volcanic outgassing and water delivery from comets 3.8 billion years ago
What are oceans?
Study of the relationship of the human and nonhuman worlds over time
What is environmental history?
Covers 71% of the surface of the Earth
What is water?
Mixture of water, salts, dissolved gases, and other particulates
What is seawater?
Covalent bond in which the atoms have an unequal attraction for electrons and so the sharing is unequal
What is polar covalent bond?
Field of study closely related to marine biology and is the scientific study of the oceans
What is oceanography?
Periodic, short-term changes in the height of the surface of the ocean at a particular place
What are tides?
Process whereby plants use energy from the sun and carbon dioxide from the air to create sugars
What is photosynthesis?
Method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses
What is the scientific method?
Condition of the atmosphere at a given place and time
What is weather?
Whereby living things convert sugar to energy in the presence of oxygen
What is cellular respiration?
Regions that are below sea level
What are ocean basins?
Tendency of water molecules to stick to other surfaces
What is adhesion?
Consists of evaporation, condensation, sublimation, precipitation, transpiration, runoff and infiltration
