Permiable

Permeable allow some substances to go through the cell membrane

impermeable does not allow anything to go through the cell membrane

selectivly allows some substances to pass trough

Diffusion

Definition of diffusion  The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration until they reach EQuilibrium ( till they are spread out)

ex. blow dryer, fart, perfume

100

Concentration Gradient

concentration gradient, goes high to low (down) concentration gradient

Concentration gradient a difference in substance between two areas

100

Definition of osmosis

The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration (low solute concentration) to an area of lower concentration (higher solute concentration)

100

Turgor pressure

Large central vacuole that is filled with water

Outward pressure on the cell wall of a plant cell is called turgor pressure

Nutrients become dissolved in water in the soil

Fertilizers must be applied in small amounts

Maintaining healthy body systems pt. 1

Traditional  health practices are based on the wisdom and experience of a culture and its knowledge holders in diverse communities.

200

Maintaining healthy body systems pt.2

Wisdom is taught and passed on generations

Most people rely on conventional healthcare practices.

Sage

  •  one of four sacred medicine plants

  • indigenous use in everyday life,

  • Many traditions and protocols for burning sage

  • Cleansing the body

200

Qi gong

  • is a practice deep roots in chinese medicine, philosophy and martial arts

  • The word pronounced “Qi”thanslates to life energy

  • The movements involve deep rhythmic breathing

  • People do it for exercise, relaxation, self-healing, and preventive medicine.

Yoga

the practice of yoga —- began as part of an approach to health care known as Ayurveda

  • Ayurveda was practiced in india and is a system of health care that treats the body

  • The words “Ayu”  and “Veda” mean life and knowledge

Vaccines

  •  help protect the body from infection

  • After being vaccinated, the immune system recognizes it and immediately begins to defend the body against it.

  • pathogen (a harmful organism that we often refer to as a germ)

300

Antibiotics

  • used to treat bacterial infections

  • Antibiotics are substances that fight infections caused by bacteria.

  • They either kill bacteria or prevent them from growing or reproducing.

300

Surgerys

  •  can help treat injuries and medical conditions

  • Surgical procedure is done to improve the body's function

Mind and body emotions pt.1

An individual’s wellness depends on how effectively the mind, body, emotions, and spirit function together as a cohesive whole.

300

Mind and body emotions pt.2

Psychology is a branch of mental health care that deals with the ways in which our thinking, behavior, and emotions are interconnected and can affect the body.

Biomaterials def.

Biomaterials engineers design and build materials and structures that can be used in the human body. These technologies can improve human health in many ways:

400

Biomaterials do.

Stents are little tubes that prop open blood vessels,

Artificial organs or bones can replace real ones that are damaged,

Fabrics or meshes are used to patch tears inside the body.,

Tiny nanocarriers are being tested as a way to deliver medicines to body cells.

400

Tissue culture

layers of cells are grown in glass or plastic containers

400

Xenotransplantation

Pigs may be the solution to organ transplants

Most importantly, scientists can change pig cells genetically so that a human body will not recognize pig organs as foreign tissue.

Transplanting an organ from one species to another is called Xenotransplantation

The risk is transferring a animal disease to a patient then a patient can transfer it to someone else

We will not know if xenotransplantation is dangerous until experiments are done on humans

400

Phages

Biophage Pharma Inc., is developing a new treatment for superbugs using viruses called bacteriophages, or “phages.”

a phage uses its genetic material to make copies of itself.

new phages break out of the bacterial cell, killing it.

This method of fighting bacterial infections is useful because there are no side effects of the phages targeting only specific cells

Cord blood

Cord blood

Researchers have found that “cord blood” from umbilical cords can be an effective treatment for some types of leukemia

there is only a little blood in each umbilical cord, even this small quantity is often enough

Hospitals around the world collect umbilical cord after birth

The unit of cord blood is then available to be injected into the veins or bone marrow of a person with leukemia.

The doctors hope these new cells will replace the unhealthy bone marrow cells and turn them into healthy cells
