What evidence does the composition of soil provide about where it came from?

Soil has rocks such as pebbles, gravel, sand, clay, and silt in it. In our investigation we found out that when we add water to soil and let it settle it forms layers. Based off of how much of each type of rock or material is in it, that gives us clues about where it came from. For example if it had mostly sand it came from the desert or beach. If it had mostly humus it came from the forest. If it had mostly gravel it came from the mountains.
