What is matter?

Matter is anything that takes up space.

(Matter is NOT everything).

100

What is the first step of the scientific method?

1. Ask a question.

100

How can we find out more about matter?

We can use our five senses!

100

What happens when you put pressure on Oobleck? (When you squeeze it or push it?)

It turns into a solid!

200

What is a solid?

A solid is a type of matter. It does not change its shape. It does not flow. It does not compress easily.

200

What is the second step of the scientific method?

2. Gather information.
200

What are three different types of matter that we learned about in class? (states of matter)

Solid, liquid, gas.

200

What is a chemical reaction?

It is when two chemicals mix and make something new happen!

300

What is a liquid

A liquid is a type of matter. It changes its shape to match its container. It flows. It does not compress easily.

300

What is the third step of the scientific method?

3. Form a hypothesis.

300

What does all matter have in common?

It has weight.

(It has mass)

(It takes up space / has volume)

300

How do you make Gloop? (slime)

You mix a solution of water/glue with a solution of water/borax. The borax and the glue react to form slime.

400

What is a gas?

A gas is a type of matter. It expands to fit its container. It flows. It compresses easily.

400

What is the fourth step of the scientific method?

4. Test the hypothesis.

400

Why does an object float in water?

If something is less dense than water, it will float.

400

Why did the raisins float and sink in the carbonated water?

The carbon dioxide gas attached to the raisins (like floaties) and then the raisin/bubble became lighter (less dense) than the water and rose up. Then, the bubbles popped, releasing the gas, and the the raisin was more dense than the water so it sank.

500

What is a solution?

A solution is a liquid with something dissolved into it.

500

What is the fifth step of the scientific method?

5. Share the results.
500

How does matter change?

It can change from one state to another, like a liquid to a gas. It cannot be destroyed, only changed.

500

What is a non-Newtonian fluid?

A non-Newtonian fluid is a liquid that also behaves as a solid at times (like when its under pressure).
