What is Mechanical Energy
Mechanical Energy is Movement
In order for electrical energy to flow in a circuit, the circuit must be ______, meaning there is a continuous looped path.
CLOSED
What do you call the movement of light when it bounces off an object directly?
Give one real-world example
Reflection. Example: mirror, looking at the top of water and seeing your reflection
What is thermal energy?
Heat energy
What is force?
A push or a pull that is applied to an object
DAILY DOUBLE: Give one human and one non-human example of mechanical energy.
(Discretion of the teacher)
Name two CONDUCTORS of electricity and two INSULATORS of electricty
Examples:
Conductors - copper, metal, water
Insulators - sand, glass, rubber
What do you call the movement of light that passes through an object?
Give one real-world example.
Transmit. Example: through a window or glass or clear object.
What is friction?
What are the two types of mechanical energy and what do they mean?
Potential - Stored energy
Kinetic Energy - moving energy
What is the difference between a series and parallel circuit
Series circuit - all the current flows through one path.
Parallel circuit - the electrical current flows in different paths.
What do you call the bending of light as it passes through an object?
Give one real-world example
Refraction. Examples: looking at something in the water and seeing it broken/moved. Looking through a lens that magnifies
Why would Ms. Carroll burn herself on a metal spoon in a boiling pot of water, but not with a rubber spoon?
The metal spoon is a THERMAL CONDUCTOR and the rubber spoon is a THERMAL INSULATOR.
Force is measured in what increment AND using what scale?
Force is measured in Newtons and is measured with a spring scale
If you move something higher (increase the height of an object), what does that do to the potential energy of the object (Hint: Think roller coaster!)
The higher up the object, the MORE potential energy it has.
DAILY DOUBLE:
What happens to the light bulbs in a series circuit when the wire is cut?
What about a parallel circuit?
In a series circuit, all of the lightbulbs are on one path, so therefore all the lights turn off.
In a parallel circuit, it depends on where you cut the wire. So long as the lightbulb has a closed circuit, the lightbulb will stay on.
What do you call the movement of light when it is absorbed by an object
Absorption. Example: Light is absorbed into clothing, plant leaves, any objects that don't reflect, refract, or transmit light is absorbing it.
Spiraling Review: What are the three states of matter and give examples for each?
Solid - glass, wood, plastic
Liquid - water, soda, lemonade
Gas - oxygen, helium,
If I increase the MASS of an object I need to move, I will need to do what to the force I apply to the object?
If you increase the MASS of an object, you will need to increase the FORCE you apply to that object
To make the marble roll farther, you should increase the height of the ramp.
Give two examples of electrical energy CONVERTING or CHANGING into a different form of energy.
Examples: Light --> a light bulb lighting in a circuit
Mechanical --> a fan/machine moving
Thermal --> Heating unit
Sound --> Speakers or headphones plugged in
What is the angle of incidence? Explain how it works
Angle of Incidence = Angle of Reflection. This means that whatever angle that light hits a reflective surface, it will bounce off or reflect at that same angle.
Name two real world examples of thermal energy and two real world examples of sound energy
Thermal: fire, rubbing hands together, heater, an overheated computer, oven, stove
Sound: screaming, yelling, speakers, music, airplane engine, etc.
Which of the following objects have the least amount of FRICTION and why: Plastic block, wood block, sandpaper block, ice block
The ice block has the least amount of friction because it is smooth, and as it melts water helps decrease the amount of friction
