A testable question needs to end with a ______.
Question Mark
James and Katie want to test how the amount of water given to lettuce plants affects the number of leaves of lettuce.
Name the independent variable, dependent variable and at least 2 controlled variables.
Independent: Amount of water
Dependent: Number of leaves of lettuce
Controlled: Amount of soil, sunlight, or fertilizer, temperature, growing time, etc.
What are the four things you need for a testable question?
1. Question word (who, what, when, where, why, how, which)
2. Independent Variable
3. Dependent Variable
4. Question Mark
Write a scientific hypothesis for the following experiment:
Walter and Isabel want to test how the amount of salt added to water affects how long it will take that water to boil.
If more salt is added to the water then the water will take longer to boil because salt has a higher boiling point than water.
Or something similar, need to have used if... then... because...
What are the different types of variables
Independent, Dependent, Controlled
The three most important words in a hypothesis are...
If, then, because
Claire and Tina wish to test which brands of chewing gum lasts the longest.
Name the independent variable, dependent variable and at least 2 controlled variables.
Independent: Brand of chewing gum
Dependent: Amount of time before the gum loses its taste
Controlled: the chewer, number of pieces of gum, mass of gum, frequency of chews, etc.
Write a testable question for the following scenario.
Anna and Matthew want to test which of three different types of fertilizers grow the tallest sunflowers.
How does the type of fertilizer affect the height of sunflowers?
Write a scientific hypothesis for the following experiment:
Tim and Mario want to test how the amount of fertilizer affects the height of their corn crops.
If the amount of fertilizer is increased then the height of the corn crop will increase because the corn will have more nutrients to grow.
Or something similar, need to have used if... then... because...
Changed
You need this type of list when writing out your materials.
Bulleted
Lily and Danny wish to test how the amount of candy affects blood sugar levels.
Name the independent variable, dependent variable and at least 2 controlled variables.
Independent: The amount of candy
Dependent: Blood sugar levels
Controlled: type of candy, duration of eating the candy, time after eating that blood sugar was tested, person, etc.
Write a testable question for the following scenario.
Walter and Isabel want to test how the amount of salt added to water affects how long it take that water to boil.
How does the amount of salt added to water affect how long it takes the water to boil?
Write a scientific hypothesis for the following experiment:
Stephen and Charlie want to test how the number of hours spent studying affects student test scores.
If the number of hours spent studying increased, then the student test scores will increase because the students will have had more practice with the test material.
Or something similar, need to have used if... then... because...
The dependent variable is __________ in an experiment.
Observed
The two most important things to remember when writing a procedure are...
A numbered list, and detailed complete sentences.
Stephen and Charlie want to test how the number of hours spent studying affects student test scores.
Name the independent variable, dependent variable and at least 2 controlled variables.
Independent: Number of hours spent studying
Dependent: Student test scores
Controlled: students, test topics, test length, time of day of test, number of hours slept, etc.
Write a testable question for the following scenario.
George and Paul want to test which type of vegetable seed germinates the quickest. (Germinate means “to sprout”).
Which type of vegetable seed germinates the quickest?
How does the type of vegetable seed affect germination rates?
Write a scientific hypothesis for the following experiment:
Kathryn and Madison want to test the effect the volume of music played on plant growth.
If the music is played louder, then the plant will grow taller because the larger amplitude of the sound waves provide greater amounts of carbon dioxide to the plant to perform photosynthesis.
Or something similar, need to have used if... then... because...
The controlled variables _______________ in an experiment.
Stay the same
What does RERUN stand for?
Recall, Explain, Results, Uncertainty, New
Explain why is it important to only have one independent variable?
It is important to only have one independent variable in order to see the correlation between that one variable and the dependent variable. The purpose of the experiment is to observe how one variable affects another. If more than one variable is changed then one cannot be certain which variable had the effect on the dependent variable. If more than one variable changes it is not a fair experiment.
Write a testable question for the following scenario.
Megan wants to test the height of plants when exposed to different amounts of light.
How does the amount of light affect the growth height of plants?
Write a scientific hypothesis for the following experiment:
Robert and Cindy want to test whether the no name brand is better than the name brand laundry detergent at removing stains from clothes.
If the no name brand of laundry detergent is used then there will be more stains remaining after being washed because the no name brand detergent has less ingredients than the name brand detergent.
Or something similar, need to have used if... then... because...
